A large number attended the il- lustrated lecture on Africa at the Con- gregational church Sunday evening. Mrs. Lloyd P. Ayer was in Hartford Tuesday. Deacon Robinson’s 80th Birthday. Tuesday' evening about fifty friends of Deacon Lavius A. Robinson gave him a surprise party at his homse, it being the 80th anniversary of his birth, Refreshments were served. During the evening selections were listened to on the phonograph and there were solos and songs by the Franklin choir, ac- companied by Mrs. Louis Smith at the organ. Remarks were mede by Rev. B. P. The Women's club of Brooklyn held its first meeting of the year in ‘Baptist vestry, it being a social aftwp noon. In the election 112 straight demo- cratic votes were cast and 156 straight republican. Eight ballots were thrown out, as there was no mark upon them to designate for whom: voted.. Oliver Downs, Frederick Card and John Fis gerald were elected selectmen. - A tax of 12 mills was voted. Thirty-five dol- lars was_appgopriated for Memorial day. J. Sprague Bard and Theodore D. appointed cemetery committee and an appropriation of $50 ‘was voted for the cemetery, Mrs, Vandeventer and daughter re- turned Monday to their home in Brooklyn, N. Y. About eighteen persons of the Pine Grove summer colony went to Niantic Tuesday evening and attended the Harvest supper given by the Ladies Aid society at the Congregational church.
