Brown The singing by the chorus and quartette and the so- los by Miss Elizabeth Abbe of Mount Vernon and Albert Brown of Boston ‘were greatly enjoyed. Rev. Mr. Brown gave an interesting talk on the war. A desire to have more of these services has been expressed, but as those who have taken the principal parts are among the summer visitors it will not be “possible to continue them. STAFFORDVILLE Suspicious Action of New.Watchman of Garland Mill, Burned Wednesday —Nirs. Avery = Benson, 87, Dies in House Where She Was Born, The Garland mill was totally de- stroyed by fire early Wednesday morn- ing. The alarm was given by the ringing of the two church bells about 2 o'clock. At that time the flames had gained such headway that it was im- possible to save the mill or tell where the fire started. The watchman,was a new man, had been here only a few days, and has not been seen since the fire. His belongings at his boarding place had also been taken away. He ieft the mill keys in the mill door. The water from the tower on the hill to the sprinkling system had been shut off. It was let on as soon as this was dis- covered, after the alarm was given, but it was too late to be of any use. The mill had a narrow escape from destruction by fire July Sth, also Aug. 13th, when an attempt was made to burn the mill. The fire at that time was put out by the sprinklers. The mill was owned by George Gifford of New York. The loss is stated to be about $60,000 and the plant was in- sured, It is evident that the fire was in- cendlary. The loes will be a severe blow to the town, especially this sec- tion, as it is feared that the mill will not be rebuilt. Funeral of Mrs. Benson. Mrs. Sarah Benson, 87, died last Sunday night about 11 o'clock. ‘The deceased has been In failing health, and since she broke her leg Aug. 10th ‘has been a great sufferer and has been unconscious some of the time. Mre. Benson was born in Staffordville April 25, 1827. and died in the house ere she was born and which has always been her home. She has been twice Her first husband was Hen- Haradon, who dled in 1830.
