I washed his face with the Cuticura Soap and warm water every night and morning and applied the Cuticura Ointment for four weeks and his face was cured. I got another cake of ‘Cuticura Soap and ane box of Cuticura Oint- ‘ment and was only using them for two weeks snd they made his scalp nice and clean. His head was cured.” (Signed) Mrs. Isabeile Guenther, May 26, 1913. EDWARD J. LYNCH. | Despite th inclement weather, one of the largest meetings that White Cross | council, No. 13, Knights of Columbu has held this season, assembled in the | council chamber in the Steiner build- ing on Kriday evening. The meeting was opened promptly at 8 p. m. by Grand .Knight Henry D. Buckle: A arge amount of routine business was transacted, which included the election | | of four new members and the reception | | of twelve applications for membership. | | It was announced that more than $200 | { had been the net result of the annual | reception and ball recently given by the | council in the armory. The committee appointed to look up ADDRESSED KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Dr. E. J. In 1900, 11,058 people died of consumption, a proportion of over 10,000 per 100,000 deaths. It will be seen that over 100,- 000 lives are lost a year through this dread disease or to put it a little dif- ferently one death out of every ten is caused by consumption. In fact more people die of consumption than of scarlet fever, measles, typhoid ferer, diphtheria, whooping-cough and in- fluenza_altogether. Fully eighty per- cent. of the victims of tuberculosis are in the middle period of life, between the ages of fifteen and fifty. Has Two Aims. The general indications for prophyl- axis or prevention in pulmonary tu- berculosis may be classified as includ- ing two broad aims. First to destroy the tubercle bacillus and prevent its spread in the dried state and second when once it has gained entrance to the body to eliminate it as quickly as possible or inhibit its growth by means of the vital energies. The tubercle bacillus which is the one and only cause of tuberculosis is unable (ex- cept when cultivated artificially in the labaratory to increase or multiply out- side the body of either human beings or animals. _ This is partly because it requires high body temperature and partly because of its slow growth as it is crowded out of existence by oth- er micro-organisms which grow more rapidly and luxuriantly. Fresh air and sunlight destroy it. It therefore ex- ists among us only from being present in (1) the secretions of tuberculosis human beings and (2) in the milk and meat of tuberculous animals. The bacillus gains entrance to the human stem first and most frequently from tuberculous matter given off by con- sumptives after it has become dry and pulverized and the bacilli diffused in | the air are then either directly inhaled THE PYRENE FIRE EXTINGUISHER FOR MOTOR CARS AND GARAGES. Any physician be he general prac- tioner ‘or consultant who has to deal with tuberculosis patients and who considers sanatorium treatment to be indicated, in many cases will be con- fronted frequently, perhaps in the ma- jority of cases which come under his observation, with a type of fear or preconcieved dislike for institutional treatment. The first thought with which this individual is possessed is the idea that he is sure to meet pa- | tients much sicker than himself, who are real consumptives, while he im- agines himself to be only slightly tu- berculous. Perhaps it is only in the presence of the physician who diag- Ros the case that he is willing even to admit that he may be tuberciilous.
