Organized Baseball—Dev ore Sticks with Philadelphia. Chicago, Jan. 26.—The first of the legal battles soon io be waged between | the forces of organized and outiaw | Daseball concern possession of the services of thres players, Ward Miller, King' Cole and William Killifer. Miller, the outfielder, whose deser- tion_of the Chicago Nationals for the St. Louis Federals was announced re- cently, stepped into the limelight to- day when President Murphy of the Chicago club announced. he Was pre- pared to sue for an injunc to pre- vent Miller from playing with the rival league. Murphy also said he fould sue the plaver personally for damages should the latter play with | St. Louis. Federals Have Cole Cinched. The Federal league, through Presi- dent Gilmore, declared that it had a clear case against the New . York | Americans for the services of Plcher | Cole, who had signed a Federal con- tract., The New York club has an- nounced that Cole had made a propo- | sition which the club had accepted, | and argued, according to reports from the cast, that thi$ acceptance was equivalent to signing Cole. Cole said | he had not made terms with the New | York club, but had wired President Farrell in substance “I think I am worth so much a year.” Cole empha- sized the “think” as defense. The Fed- { eral officials declared the dates of the Cole-Farrell negotiations would be a legal point In their favor. President Gilmore said he had re- ceived legal advice today which strengthened the Federal position in | the dispute with the Philadelphia Na- | tional leauge club for the possession of | Killifer. Decisions in the Miller, Cole, Killifer cases, if they came to trial, are expected to form baseball history:. | Devore With Phillies. Josh Devore was lost to the Feder- | als today and undoubtedly will be with the Philadelphia Nationals the coming | season. He received a telegram which declared the club had accepted his | | terms, and thereupon Federals de- clined to carry on negotiations with him. Devore said the first contract offered by President Baker of the Quakers included a $400 increase in salary, but that he returned it with a request for a greater increase, and to- day’s telegram indicated that his re- quest would be granted. Yesterday's Trading Left Largely in| Hands of Professionals. | ew York, Jan. 26-—The broad and | active trading which attended last Week's buoyant rise In stocks ‘was | missing from today’s market. During | the greater part of the session the movement was narrow, although an upward tendency was still visible. The | outside demand for stocks and bonds | fell off sharply. Trading was left | largely in the hamds of the profes- slonal operators, who found it difficult to make headway in either direction. | Stocks were sold at the opening in | the belief that the reaction which set in on Saturday had not run its course, but the only result was an inconse- guential downward movement. The facility with which the market ab- sorbed a fairly large volume of selling in .the first hour caused traders to hange their tactics, and a slow ad- ance began. Steel developed market strength on the upturn, selling for a | me at a gain of two points. The cop- sers and Harrimans also made a good showing. The strong undartone of the imarket “so impressed the shorts that they began to bid for stocks, and trad- ing became more active, but in the last haif hour there was a swift reaction which carried down some of the lead- ers a point from their best prices. Last prices, however, were well above Sat- urday’s close. Steel shares profited optimistic reports of trade conditions and by bullish forecasts of the forthcoming quarterly statement of United States Steel. In explanation of the strength of the | coppers it was said that the domestic copper market was broadening and that prices were tending upward. | There was a good European demand for the coppers. oLndon’s operations | here were chiefly on the buying side Eele Do.
