That there is no ground Mrs. R becea A. Preston of Providence on hich to solidiy base her complaint to Governor Baldwin that Town Clerk | Sesslons L. Ada (Central- Village) of | Plainfield violated @ state law of Con- neeticut, and that Rev Ernest 1 Loomis of the Baptist church In Moos- up. did likewise, when Mr. Adams is- sued & marriage license on Sept. 19 to her gaughter, Helen, and James Jew- ell Kinnéy of Apponaug, R. I, and Rev. | i | | The Vaughn Foundry Co. MILL, CASTINGS a Specialty. Orders Recaive Prompt Attention Mr. Loomis married the cople, is made evident by an investigation of the facts in the case. The marriage license issued to the couple by Town Clerk Adams, the statements in it as to the age and resi- dence of the contracting parties, Miss Preston and Mr. Kinney, being made under oath, as Tequired by law, shows that Mr. Kinney's age was given as 33 years and that of Miss Preston as 21 years, though she really is but 16. The license also shows residence claimed in the town of Plainfleld. These facts are a matter of record, and put whatever responsibility there is for Mrs. Pres- ton's disturbed state of mind over the eplsode, on the shoulders of other per- sons than Town Clerk Adams and the Rev. Mr. Loomis. They were not to be expected, especially in the case of the town clerk who ssued the license, to question the veracity of statements be- ing made under oath. Mr, Adams could not be reached Fri- day, ‘as he was away for the day, but Rev. Mr, Loomis talked freely of the affair. He said that in_view of the publicity given the affair by Mrs, Pres- ton’ appeal to the governor, he wanted no misunderstanding as to the facts or as to his attitude in the matter. Rev. Mr. Loomis said that the couple came to him on the night of Sept. 19 with the necessary marriage license. Miss Preston and Mr. Kinney talked and acted in a straightforward manner. Owing to the rather unusually late hour at which they called to be mar- ried, Rev. Mr. Loomis was particul ly careful to question tE he ordinarily would had they more regular hour upo n as brought them to him, but even this scrutinous Inquiry failed to devel- ore th come op anything irregular. Their license answered every requirement of the law, it had been duly sworn to, so Rev. Mr. Loomis performed the cere- mony It ‘was not until five da; Rev. Mr. Loomis learned t le he married was figuring ment match, this information coming to him in a letter from Mrs, Presto In the same letter she asked for cer- s later that at the coup- in an elope tain information as to ma > laws in Connecticut, which was supplied, as far as he felt competent to do o, by Rey. Mr, Loomis. Rey, Mr. Loomis puts the responsi- bility for any violation of the law in connection with the affair squarely up to Mr. Kinney, who claimed residence in_the field and ade neto. 45 Friday morn while most )d people Putnam were sti ng business with our old friend Morpheus, the magneto form of phone service, which has served this | and other surrounding towns so well for years and vears, passed into the discard and was replaced I the modern and up-to-da mmon bat- tery system The ecutover, highly siccessful s made within a period of less than a minute.
