MARGOT HAL Detroit, Mich, Aug. 11—Racing at the opening of the Grand Circuit meet at the state fair grounds today was rather tame. The only real contest was in the Board of Commerce Stake for 2:16 pacers, which went five heats before Margot Hal was returned a winner. Dillon Axworthy won the trotting division of the matron stake; ‘Tillie Lipton, the pacing division and Jdord Dewey the 2:15 trot, all in straight heats. Dillon Axworthy was by far the best among the ten starters in the Matron Trotting section. In the first heat Serrill held the colt back in the field until the far turn was reached and then easily took the lead from Ima Jay. At the finish he was a couple of lengths to the good. Ruby Watts and Peter Johnson had a fine brush down the stretch for second place, going under the wire noses part. the second heat the Axworthy colt was never headed. He seemed to have plenty in reserve and could have low- ered his time considerably had he been driven out. The pacing section, with only three starters, was merely a procession from start to finish in both heats, the colts In m F. Hill, Real Estate and Fire |never changing their relative positions after the word was given. It took Margot Hal some time to get a going in the Board of Commerce Stake, but when she finally found her stride she made a show of her oppon- ents. Lord Dewey had everything his own way in the 2:15 trot, taking three heats as he pleased. Tomorrow’s programme includes the of Commerce $5,000 for 2:16 class trotters and the 2:10 trot and 2:06 pace at $1,000 each. A rally FINANGIAL AND COMMERCIAL SUDDEN MARKET STRENTH. Activity of Final Hour Mcre Than Equalled the Whole Day Besides. New York, Aug. 11—After four hours of alternate declines and ad- vances, mostly within circumseribed limits, today’s stock market took on a sudden appearance of strength and ac- v in the final hour, transactions in that brief period more than equal- ling all the other hours of the ses- sion. The leader of the movement was United States Steel, in which large buying orders made their appearan ostensibly from influential sources. There s no news to account for the sudden inquiry for steel and - trade prospects set forth by last Satur day’s tommage figures for July, hardly accepted as favorable. The buying later comprehended Can- adian Pacific. Union Pacific, St. Paui and many of the grangers, wh vance was ascribed to belated nition of the benefits to from recent rains in the Canadian Pacific’s gain of almost fi points preceded the declaration of ti regular dividend, part of which, usual. was paid from sales of the com- pany’s laud. While considerabie realizing was seen in the later dealings. the market lost little of its advance, average gains extending from one to two points. Southern Pacific was almost the sole stock of prominence to show some backwardness, losing a point on publication of Union Pacific’s sub- sciiotion terms and making up only a part of its decline. London which sold a small amount of American cks here .was listless and the virtual failure of another col- onial underwriting project was accept- ed ag proof that the British market for securities still is in a state of con- gestion.
