C. nine on July 20th, on the Voluntown grounds before about 300 epectators, the home team -easily taking the Athletics into camp by a score of 9 to 0 in a nicely played game, making the second shutout the locals have scored in as many days. Larkin for thé home team pitched a great game striking out 11 men and held the visitors t¢ 2 hits and was al- 20 credited with 6 assists and 1 error. The home team outclassed their op- ponents at all stages of the game getting to Brickley for 4 singles, 3 doubies and a triple, and by clever fielding by the infield holding them without a chance for a run after the 1st inning. The Jewett City team re- tired in 1, 2, 3 order in every inning but the Ist and 3rd. The outfield was almost unnecesary as only one ball was driven to that part of the grounds and that was misjudged by the right fielder, but no harm was done. The visitors were tendered a great ova- tion at the close of the game from a large and enthusiastic crowd of rooters. Two base hits Kelley, Larkin and Dupont. Three base hits E. Dupont. The first game was won eas- ily by the home club by a score of 8 to & but the locals had to go eleven innings to win the second by a score of 2 to 1. A crowd of worid's series proportions, the greatest that ever saw a mid-week game in New York was present. In the first game Camnitz held his own' with Demaree for four innings, but fell in the fifth after Kommers muffed Meyers’ easy fly. This error was followed by Snodgrass’ infield sin- gle, Burns’ triple and Shafer’s home run, the inning netting New York four runs. The second game was a pitchers' battle between - Mathewson and Fromme on the New York side, and Adams for -Pittsburgh. The visitors scored in the first half of the eighth when Gibson tripled with one out. Adams popped to the infleld and Snod- grass made a three base muff of Byrne’s line drive, scoring Mensor, who ran for Gibson. Burns tled it up for New York in the second half when he hit a home run into the left fleld bleachers. In the tenth inning Pittsburgh filled the bases, but failed to score. Burns again led tHe Glants to victery in the eleventh. His single opened the Inning and Shafer was passed. Fletcher popped to Miller and Viox fumbled on Doyle, fillin, the bases. Burns then scored on Merkle’'s sacrifice fly. Wagner was back in the game after a long layoff and struck out four times, twice in each game. New York, July 22—During the greater part of today’s market ses- sion prices exhibited more irregular- ity than at any time since the upward movement of last week. Trading fre- quently came to an absofute standstill and the movement lacked the breadth of the previous day, albeit it in- cluded numerous specialties in the in- dustrial division. A rai?_\' strong opening, due in part to the higher level of prices quot- od in London, soon gave way 1o gen- eral declines, notably in New Haven issues, California Petroleums and some of the very obscure stocks, while Wells IFargosradded nine points ! its eleven -point loss of the pre- vious day. The decline in New Ha- ven issue resulted largely from the announcement that the company pur- poses to issue $67,562,000 of debe ture bonds. some two-thirds of which will be utilized in paylng off matur- ing bonds. 3 On the other hand a few of the bet- ter known railroad issues, such as Baltimore and Ohio, grangers and Ca- nadlan Paciflc, were consistently strong. Greatest gains, however, were recorded among the industrials, where advances ranged from 2 to 3 points, The greatest gain was in Republic Steel preferred, which rose eight Ppoints, the movement being accom- panied by the company’s semi-annual report, showing a very substantial in- crease in earnings for that period. Reading, United States Steel and Canadian Pacific attained their best prices in the final hour, but realizing sales in the latter soon caused it to yield part of its advantage, while the balance of ‘the list receded frac- tionally, the close, however, showing | a preponderance of net gains. Money conditions reflect great ease dnd_increased activity. Some of the funds now available are from the, in- terior, with a sprinkling from abroad. The general bond market was heavy, with especial weakness in teel fives. Weakness was again a féature of the government bond list, the 2's and Panama 2's declining 3-4 and U. New Haven Road to Buy Steel Cars and New Equipment New York, July 22.—The New Yeork, New Haven and Hartford railroad pro- poses to increase its capitalization to the extent of more than $67,000,000 for the purpose of purchasing new steel <cars and passenger equipment and to make other “necessary improvements” and to refund maturing indebtedness. This was announced today by ‘Presi- dent Mellen, who has called a meeting of the stockholders of the road to be held August 22 to authorize an issue of $67,652,400 six per cent. convertible twenty year debentures. He said that of this amount $40,000,000 would be used to refund one year notes due December 1, next: $5,000,000 for an indebtedness maturing February 1, 1914, and the balance for improve- ments. These include the completion of electrification work on the New Haven and the elimination of grade crossings. Authorization of an issue of a suf- ficient amount of new capital stock to provide for the conversion of the de- bentures at par will also be asked which would bring the company’s to- tal authprized -stock up to approxi- mately $260,000,000. to 100 Do. pfd B. 100 Am.
