The silver output, recovered entirely as a by-product in refining the gold, cop- per and lead produced, was 96,623 fin ounces, valued at $59,361, a decrease of 11. 1 quantity but an in- crease of $2,065 in value. _Of the gold in 1912 the placers yielded ounces, against 1,447.28 ounces in 1911, and lhe quartz of deep mines produced 9,302.99 ounces, against 5,699.64 ounces in 1911. The copper mines produced 562.60 ounces in 1911 and 443.50 ounces in 1912, and the lead mines produced 241.92 ounces in 1912. Of the 50 producing gold placers in 1912, there were 23 in Georsgia, 22 in North Carolina and 5 In South Caro- ltha. There were 33,813 short tons of siliceous ores sold or treated from Ap- palachian gold mines in 1912, of which 14,258 tons were mined in North Caro- line, and 12,358 tons in South Carolina, chiefly from the well known Tola and Haile mines, which are the two largest gold mines east of the Black Hills. The average recovery of gold (including nominal recovery of silver) per ton of siliceous ores treated in the eastern states in 1912 was $5.73. The average for North Carolina was $10.62 and for South Carolina the remarkably low figure of $1.34. The copper production in 1912 was 19,265,945 pounds, valued at $3,178,882 & decrease of 339,441 pounds in quan- tity but an increase of $728,208 in val- ue. Of the towal output 18,483,173 pounds came from the Ducktown dis- trict of eastern Tennessee, from 603,229 short tons of pyritic copper ore treated. The remainder was chiefly from Penn- sylvania, where, at the Cornwall iron mines, magnetic separation of large tonnages of magnetite ores results in the recovery of copper-bearing pyrite, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina also contributed to the copper output. The production of lead was 561,026 pounds, valued at $25,246, a decrease of 273,716 pounds in quantity and of $12,- 317 in value. The greater part of the production was derived from the lead- zine mines of Wythe county, Va. as usual, but an output of 92,000 pounds was also reported from North Carolina. | The zinc output, figured as spelter, was 144,699,863 polnds, valued at $9,- $84,291, & decrease of 14,661,695 poun in guantity but an Increase of $901,25 in value. Of the total production, 139, 510,008 pounds, valued at $9,826, came from the zinc mines at Franklin | Furnace, J, and over 4,000,000 pounds me from eastern Tennesaee.
