SHEPARD WINS CUP IN QUALIFYING ROUND Breaks Record for Course in State Golf Championship Tournament. New Haven, Conn., June 25.—Ajeing the record for the course in the morn- ing and breaking it in the afternoon, ‘W. E. Shepard of New Haven today won the cup for the lowest score in the qualifying round of the fifteenth annwvw] state golf championship tour- nament. His score for the morning was 77, for the afternoon 78, making the total for the 36 holes 153. After completing his card S nounced he would not be a contender for the state championship and with- drew from the tournament. Poor health, he said, was the reason for his action. All but 16 of the 116 who started in the tournament were eliminated as contenders for championship by to- day’s play. The sixteen who will fight it out for the title during the next FINANGIAL AND COMMERCIAL MARKET HEAVY AT CLOSE. News of Fresh Trouble Depressing Factor. New York, June of the stock market earlier week was lacking today ments were held within narrow limits. Some further progress upward. was made, with railroad stocks showing to the best advantage but hour the market dipped downward and gains were eliminated. Speculative interest centered in Union Pacific. Buying was influenced by expectations that the Washington authorities would approve the disso- lution plan, including the trusteeship proposed for Union Pacific’s $90.000,- 000 of Southern Pacific stock in ex- cess of the amount to be turned over to Pennsylvania. Just before the close came the long awaited news from Washington™of the attorney general's announcement that an agreement had been reached. The news failed to stimulate the market, apparently hav- 3ng been discounted by the recent rise. Traders who had bought Union Pa- cific earlier in the week took profits, and it fell more than a point under the day’s high price, closing at a frac- tional met loss. Table reports that fresh hostilities had broken out in the Balkans were partly responsible for the heavy tone of the market toward the close. In- ternational stocks were most conspic- uous in the downward movement. Londo; which bought stocks here freely ller in the week, sold about 15,000 shares today, chiefly Union Pacific. Contraction of the short interest on ‘the recent rise weakened the technical ‘position of the market, and was to some extent responsible for the falling off in démand today. There were a few weak stocks. Chesapeake and Ohio fell 2 1-2 to 53, the year's low- est, and Virginia-Carolina made a re- newed decline. The drop in Chesa- peake and Ohie gave rise to rumors concerning the company’s dividend policy for which, however, there was apparently no well established basis. Bonds were irregular, with some of the more important issues lower. To- tal sales, par valle, $1,139,000. Panama threes declined 1-8 on call.
