o sAy prz e FIREAND POLIGE_BUSINESS Eleven Fire Calls in January—Some Furniture Was Burned Firemen’s Fund—60 Entries on the Police Blotter. : For the month of January the Nor- wich fire department had eleven calls to res to, about the average num- ber. Three of them were bell elarms, and of these the most serious was for the early morning fire in the Austin ‘building, where, with damage to build- g and stacks in several stores, it is likely that & total loss of at least $10,- 000 will be paid. Adjusters as well as local men who have seen the condi- tions surrounding the fire have quite generally had generous words of praise for the efficient way in which it was held down to so small a com- On Friday Chief Stanton received from The George W. Kies company, one of the firms affected, a check for $50 in appreciation of what the depart- ment d@id. The money will be added as usual to the firemen’s fund, which now totals about $2,500. One of the peculiar fires of the month occurred in the station of En- gine company No. 2, and had all the signs of coming from a cigarette thrown carelessly into an upholstered chair. The policeman on that beat got into the station and put out the blaze with a hand extinguisher. Car- pets and draperies, besides the chalr, were damaged and $135 insurance was collected. v Police Business. In the Norwich police department 60 entries were made on the blotter at headquarters during the month of January. It was a monih rather be- low the average. Of the causes for arrrest, intoxication and breach of the peace were evenly divided, each show- ing 23 person in the toils of the law for these offenses. The following is the summary for the month: Breach of peace 23, intoxication 23, common drunkard’ 1, injury to railroad proper- tv 1, carrying concealed weapon 1, vagrancy 8, non-support 2,horse steal- ing 1, theft 1, being incorrigible 2. Disposition of the cases was made as follows upon presentment in the city court: 18 were committed, 18 paid fines or costs, 10 were discharged by the court; one was bound over to the superior court, three had their cases continued to Feb. 1, three were taken saw smoke pouring out of the win-|away by other officers, and one was dows about 4 o'clock one morning as he was coming off duty.
