THREE THROWN OUT IN RUNAWAY NORWICH BULLETIN. TUESDAY. DECEMBER 24. Mrs. George T. Howland, Her Daughter, Miss Betty How-“} land, and Miss Barbara Latham Were Driving Down Scotland Road When Their Horse Was Frightened by a Sawmill. Mrs. George T. Howland of Norwich Town, her daughter, Miss Betty How land, and Mies Barbara Latham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allan I tham, and a high spirited Kentucky thoroughbred which the late Dr. How- land brought north from the land of the blue grass, were the participants in an unusually thrilling runaway on Menday afternoon. Mrs. Howland was acgompanying the two young ladies to a tea which was to be given by Mrs. Righard R. Graham. Miss Betty was driving the buggy down the hill in the Segtland road just before reaching the Gulliver piace. Suddenly from _the | side of the road came several sharp reperts, the noise of the exhaust of a | gaspline engine, and the buzzing of the sawmill which has been located there for gome time and has been objection- ableg to people driving by. The sensi- tive horse was frightened by the un- | expected sound of the sawmill, stopped short for & moment, and then sprang forward. Mfss Betty Howland, who had the reing, was pulled out of her seat, and losing her balance, fell out of the huggy between the wheel and the shaff, striking heavily on the ground. She was mad and her hol horse conti he road, 4 ext to be thrown Washington street, in front of residence of Mrs. Willlam H the bn,g\ u\H\dN] with a post, Ha happening alon; started on his wil Betty and continue the way THE LAST CALL! THE TRUTH hour, the result would have been the same. The only serious accident on the main line of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, thus far this year between Boston and New York, was at Westport, October 3rd, when the engineer, with five years of clear record behind him, from some forever unknown cause, passed seven signals and warnings and took a No. 10 cross-over at 50 miles an hour where his speed regulation called for 15. He lost his life and the Had the cross-over been a No. 20, the regulation speed limit for which is 25 miles an But there may be some violation of rules and regulations in the future, when, with a somewhat less longer than a No. 10, l:nay save a train from disaster; and No. 20 cross-over have been ordered installed for all express service as soon as the weather will permit. Meanwhile the Public Utilities Commission of Connecticut has ordered that all express trains come to a full stop at cross-overs before the switch is changed for the detour of the train. This order is being strictly complied with and lengthens the running time between New York and Bos- ton by twelve minutes, some of which can be made up in clear sections of the track. But as SAFETY MUST BE THE FIRST CONSIDERATION, the officials of the road are now figuring to what extent there should be a readjustment of the time schedule temporarily for the winter traffic. The New York and Chicago expresses have lengthened their time for the winter by two hours and & corresponding lengthening of our five hour trains would mean a winter time of five hours and a half for our present five hour trains. This is quite unnecessary in view of the fact that the New Haven roadbed and rails are unsurpassed for solidity of construction by any railroad in the United States; and if it is finally de- termined that with these stops at cross-overs there must be a lengthening of time schedules it will not be more than fifteen minutes for the five hour express and in such proportion as may be found necessary for other trains. in him should not | ‘All_hall the | CHARLES | with Brigss { Mann their b ing t ann DANGER WITH CANDLES j Light the Christmas Tree with |electric lights.
