Practically two-thirds of the full‘amount of deposits have been re- turned to depositors. The liquidating proceedings kave been conducted by Mr. Hill and Bank Commissioner George . Newhail. The bank was closed to business last July and the prompt disposal of the bank’s holdings at an advantage to the depositors has made it possible to make payment much earlier than was expected. A case of diphtheria was reported to Health Officer Lewis Stanton Mon- day evening. When he arrived for the purpose of placing quarantine upon the premises, which are located in Oak street, the patient, a girl three years old, was dead. The health of- ficer gave orders as to the conduct of the funeral, and orders in regard to strict observance of quarantine un- til the house was thoroughly disin- fected were impressed upon members of the family and occupants of the house. The excavation extends par- allel to the present sidewalk, but in- side to the proposed line of new width to the street, which will start from gero, or the farther end of the fire house as at present located to seven feet at Broad- street. This work is being done under direction of the building committee, but just when the highway committee will commence the cutting down of Union street hill has not been definitely determined. It was supposed that the work now being done on the town hall lot would be in conjunction with the work of the highway committee in Union street, as a matter of convenience and econ- EGZEMA BROKE 0UT ON FAGE WITH RASH Hadto Tie Hands Behind Back. One day I saw the advertisement for Cuticura Soapand Ointment so I thought Iwould try them. ' After the first treatment I could sleep good. I had not used it for more than two or three days when I soon found relief. I used Cuticura Boap and Cuti- cura Ointment for about a month and waa highway committee may defer work until after the fire house is relocated and do the work in conjunction with the fire district committee. As the Wutorly fire district has made appropriation for new uniforms for the members of the fire police, it is 'probable that there will be reor- | ganization of the force, as only $150 is avallable for the uniforms. There is a large membership in the fire po- lice, but not over half a dozen pre- tend to do active duty or head the procession in the annual fire parade. It is said that it is planned to limit the membership to ten men and that these will perform active duty when- ever required. This would allow each member $15 for a uniform and it is believed that such will be ample. At the annual meeting of Granite City lodge, Royal Arcanum, Westerly, officers were elected as follows: Ethan P. Gavitt, regent; Neil Mackenzie, vice. regent; William ' E. Sisson, orator; John M. Donochue, past regent; Arthur C. Thompson, secretary; Albent E, Barber, collector; John C. Longhead, treasurer; Silas E, Lewis, chaplain; Patrick J. Sullivan, de; William Tuesday afternoon for the thirteenth time from- box 5% at the corner of Union and Main streets, for a fire on the roof of the building at the corner of Main street and Vincent lane, and occupied by William H. Greene, paint- er, in the rear part of the building. This part is in close proximity to the wood-turning plant of the H., T. Ken- von company and therefore the fire is always on the part of the building oc- cupied by Mr. Greene, who happens to be a member of the board of engineers of the Westerly flre district. There was quite a blaze on the roof when the | alarm was sent in, caused by a spark from the smokestack of the Kenyon plant. The department made quick response and the fire was extinguished and with small loss. The frequency of fires at this place, and always from the same cause, has resulted in several investigations, es- peclally since the Kenyon plant was destroyed by fire and the erection of the present stack with the new build- ing. The Kenyon company has com- plied with all regulations imposed by the board of engineers and has placed the most approved type of spark ar- rester in the stack. Local Laconics. There was more work accomplished in the post office building Tuesday than in any two days since the lay- ing of granite was commenced and without increase in the small work- ing force. There's a new boss in town. Joseph Richmond of Norwich, for- merly a member of the Westerly po- lice force, is here visiting relatives. He was among the first to respond to President Lincoln’s call for troops and enlisted in Company I, First Rhode Island regiment. The grounds surrounding the new town hall and court house are being cleared so as to give the premises a presentable appearance during the winter. The interior work is pro- gressing to the satisfaction of the building committee and contractors.
