RELIGION'S OPPORTUNITY IN FRANGE Told to Norwich Audience by Field Secretary Berry of Mec- ] | | | i All Mission Association—Work is Done With Two Boats, : Five Portable Halls and an Automobile—America Owes r Breathe it for Catarrh. Debt of Helpfulness to France. There was a large attendance at the open meeting of the McAll association, held at the Norwich club on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Leonard W. Bacon presided -and after the opening devo- tional -exercises by Rev. George H. Ewing, introduced Rev, George T. Ber- ry, fieldysecretary of the National Mc- All assoetation. Rev. Mr. Berry has recently return- ed from France, where he has been visiting the different mission halls and especially attending thé dedica- tion of -the splendid new. McAll build- ing erected in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the mission. He had, a8 he sald, gained fresh impressions of the unusual bappenings which are having so mugh influence upon the French people. Among all the vivid recollections of his visit three things stood out pre-eminently in his mind above -all the rest. One was the matchless character of the opportun- ity in France at the present time for . religious work. The barriers formed in the reactlon against a Roman hie- archy—the prevalence of free thought and socialism—are breaking down. An- other reaction is setting in in favor of religion and the mission's hope lies in this wistftilness of the pepole, who are discovering that free thought does not.. satisfy ang that socialism does mot bring true brotherhood. His second impression is the in- | creasing sense of confidence among the working force of the mission. They have laid a good foundation; they know the people and the way to work; they are entangled with no BURPRISE PARTY FOR WALDO NEWBURY Members of Ever Ready Orchestra and Choir of Trinity M. E. Church Gath- or for Social Evening. The boys of the Ever Ready orches- tra surprised one of their members, ‘Waldo Newbury, at his home on Mel- rose terrace Tuesday evening, and a delightful social time resulted. Be- sides the members of the orchestra, there were present the young ladies of the.choir of Trinity M. E. church, the entire party numbering about 25. Vo- cal ‘and instrumental selections were enjoyed and refreshments were served. The members of the orchestra are: Austin Linton, violin; Fred Manning, cornet; Ray Whitmarsh, trombone; Reginald Smith, drums; David Bynaf- sky, clarinet; Waldo Newbury, piano. ACADEMY DANCE y IN MOHEGAN PARK Forty-eight Pupils Enjoy Moonlight Mop .at Open Air Pavilion. The pupils of the Norwich Free Academy enjoyed a novel dance Tues- day evening in the pavilion at Mohe- gan park and a delightful time was enjoyed. The forty-eight who attend- ed gathered at the Rockwell street entrance at 7.30 and walked to the pa’ n. Music for the dancing, wi lasted until 11.30, was furnished & victorla. The pavilion was made attractive for the occasion with dec- oratlons of cornstalks and fifteen pumpkin moonshines. A fire in the open fireplace added to the attraction of the scene. Four of the instructors at the ‘Academy acted as chaperons. The affair was planned by Misses Lucy Loring, Dorothy Brown, Ruth Sullivan, Carrie Chapman, Sarah Lor- ing and Katharine Holms. FORESTERS’ SMOKER. Mayer Murphy a Guest—Three Local Courts Enjoyed Socill-\E'vaning With Big Attendan There were about three hundred Foresters, with their friends, gathered «in Foresters’ hall Tuesday evening for the first smoker of ihe season, held Jointly by the three local courts. Dr. J, J. Donohue presided at the exer- ciges. Through the kindness of Man- ager Pelton of the Davis theater the Begu Brummel Trio, composed of Carl O%V;y. Joe Sullivan and Roe Reeves, ‘who are appearing at the theater, ren- dered seleciions which proved most eptertaining. T. D. Daniels, an elocu- tlonist, also from the Davis theater, gave several delightful numbers. Dr. Donohue gave an interesting talk in opening the programme and pre- sented Mayor Murphy as the first speaker. The mayor entertalned the audlence with a brief address and was a»u%ied at the close. Grand Secre- tx homas O'Loughlin of Naugu- 1 and Frank J. Murtha spoke on the work of the Foresters in an inter- esting manner. Solos were rendered by Horace Corning, Raymond O'Neil, Edward Jerome of the Breed theater and Mat Bennett, Mr. O'Neil accom- panylng on the piano. Corning’s or- chestra furnished selections through- out the evening. On the conclusion of the pr a pleasant social hour was pass freshments of sandwiches, coff soda were served by the committe cigars were passed. His thirq impression was the in- adequacy of the tools with which these people have to work. They can- not possibly reach all the 86 depart- ments of France with the present equipment of only two boats, five port- able halls and an automobile. The new building is perfect in construction and plan and will be a magnetic cen- ter for the city of Paris. But parts of this are still untouched by Chris- tianity. France is a world center as well as America, and America is only paying France the debt we owe her in helping her people to thresh out the problems which they are trying at_the present time to solve.
