NORWICH BUL ~SATURDAY, JUNE 8 1912 SIGHT-SEEING Ddlegation of Grand Trunk Passenger Agents Given Joy Ride to Watch Hill—Italians Fined For Keeping Liquor For Sale Buncoed by Countryman—Light and Power Plant Passes to New Ownership—Firemen’s Memorial Tomorrow. The delegation that went to Wash- ington to urge that the Westerly post- office building be constructed of West- erly granite were politely but positive- ly Informed that it was agamst the policy of the government to specify any special granite in asking for bids tor granmite buildings, but that bids were open to all granite dealers with- out regard to location. Then the Westerly delogation withdrew all claim and, the available appropriation considered, agreed to accept a marble building. That there is evident inconsistency has been demonstrated this week when local granite dealers were invited to submit bids for @ lighthouse to be built at the breakwater at Buffalo, and the best of Westerly granite is to be used in Its comstruction. As a result of the recent seizurs of liquors at Bradford, Michael Capalbo, Natale Capalbo, Natale Pucei and Nunsjata Pucci were brought into the rhird @letrict court Friday by Consta- ble Johm Catto on complaint of Thom- Brown, chief of police. ach charged with keeping liquor for ontrary to law. After consider- able explanation, aided by Interpreter john Ruisi, the quartette pleadcd guilty and Judge Williams imposed the penalty specifiad by statutes—$20 and costs and 10 days in jail. Natale Ca- palbo took an appeal and furnished a bond of $100. The others paid the fine and decided to enter upon thefr jail term at onc Immediately after adjournment ef yurt there was considerable talk in he Ttalian tongue of a decidedly ex- citing nature. The toplc of discussion wag a general misunderstending of the situation. It was given out that the accused men had paid to a fellow countryman the sum of $17 each ani were given to understand that he ha settled the cases for that sum. Chief Brown immediately took this matter | nder consideration for investiza Friday afternoon warrant was sued for the arrest of Peter M. Rose, harged with obtaining money under false pretences, the convicted Italians giving the information that they had | each paid to Rose § he agreeing to settle the cases them for that sum which he s to be paid to police and court officials, If the charge that the money paid Rose be true, it s evident that was of the opinion that the liquor ure cases against these individuals would not be follow- ed with prosecution for keeping liquor for sale, @5 has been in the casionally in the past. Rose w court room during a part of th sion and was suggested to act ferpreter but was acceptable iudg" Willlams, When the case ended ose had disappeared. This was be- fore the evidence of his alleged action had come to the surface. Police offi- cers immediately went in search of Rose but he could not be located. He has been a resident of Westerly many vears and a property owner and there- fore it is believed that hie arrest will be effected in a short while, He will then be given an opportunity to prove his innocence. not The Washington Trust Company of Westerly, one of the oldest banking institutions in the state, of which Charles Perry is president, is planning to increase its capital stock from $200, 000 to $300,000 next week, to reports in circulation Friday even- ing. The stockholders will hold a meeting in the banking house in W erly, June 16, and it is understood that formal setion will be taken on the mat- ter at that time. The meeting of the Society of Friends is to be held in the meeting house Jlm street, known as the ing house, on Saturday, nday and Tuesday. in ers of the soclety will be present from several sections of the country, the arger number coming from Pennsyl- | ania. The raprasentatives of the Grand Trunk railway system who are on a two days’ trip to become better ac- quainted with the summer resorts in thig section readily reached by the sys- tem and close connections, arrived at Watch Hill just before noon on the steamer Watch Hill from Stonington, having come from New London by way of the Groton-Stonington trolley road to Btonington. The party, numbering | §9, came from Montreal in a special | train left at 8 o'clock Thursday night ar ew London at 8 entertainment ths hour scheduled to remain here be- fore making the trip to Block lsland. bairman Arthur M. Cottrell and his associates were tendered the use of 25 touring cars and these were all in ine when the visitors arrived, and as they neared the wharf they could read- ily read along the line of automobiles the words Westerly Board of Trade, one large letter being attached to 20 of the cars in rotation. Upon arrival the tofs were es- corted to the automobiles and were party during aken all over Waich Hill, out to the Zolf club, and then came on into Westerly hy way of Elm street, through Grove avenue, High street, Broad street, Granile sireet and back to Watch Hill by wuy of Fast avenue. | All along the roule the points of inter sl wera expiained fo the visitors. A halt was made on the return trip at he Oceas housa where VLandlord Frank Champlain was the host, and refreshments wore served. | The party was then escorted io the Block Island pier, where the steamer Raestless was moored, gally bedecked with flags. 1t was planned that the party was to make the trip to Block Island and back to New London by this steamer, but just as the Restless wag naking the landing some of the bofler tube€ blew out and in conse- quence there was delay until steamer Munnatawket couid be substituted. The visitors gave enthusiastic appre- iatfon of “the receptiorn. and were pleased with the beauty and advan- tages of Watch Hill and Westerly and 2 evident enterprise of the people ch a reception was nnexpected and they wera ovesfoged with the agreeable rding | | Mem- | ¢ STONIN-TON Pawcatuck Residents Will Not.. 8ign For Summer License—Grand Trunk Agents Entertained—Close of Me- chanics' Band Fair.
