New London County LEBANON Karl Lehmann Addresses C. E. Union ~+Congregational Church Calls Rev. Mr. Campbell-—Memeorial Sunday Services. Rev. J. O. Barrows of Norwich Town preached in the First Congregational church Sunday morning. The Chris- tian Kndeavor meeting was led by Miss Fannie Perkins. Charles Sweet led the Junior Endeavor. Karl Lehmann gave an address Mon- day evening in the First Congregation- al church on Christian Endeavor work. People were present from South Wind- ham, Liberty Hill, Goshen and the Bap- tist church. Cake and lemonade were served after the meeting. Call to Rev. Mr. Campbell. At a meating held in the church Sat- urday evening it was voted to call Rev. Mr. Campbell of Springfield, Mass., to be pastor ef the First Congregational church. B Fourteen-Table Whist. There was a whist party Friday evening in Grange hall. P’o\{rteen ta- bles were played. Cake and ice cream were served. The following prizes were awarded: Gentlemen—TF Ev- erett. Hewitt; second, Chauncey Wil- Hams. Ladies—First, Migs Virginia Loomis; second, Mrs. Everett Hewitt, Consolation prizes—Fred M. Abell and Miss Karna Larsen. Storm Damage. The storm was very severe here Friday evening. The lightning struck a tree in front of F. P. Fowler's house, entered the house, tore off paper and plastering, and did considerable dam- age. It struck a large elm in front of Mrs, Meech’s house and entered the house, but did no damage. It also en- tered Mr. Boothby's and A. C. Wil- fams’ homes. Columbias Defeated. A game of baseball was played here Baturday afternoon between the Leb- anons and Columbias. The score was 14 to 6 in favor of Lebanon. Mrs. Arthur Robinson and daughter Sara are visiting Mrs. Robinson's daugh Mrs. Frank Churchill, of Rocky Hill. ¥ Miss Mabel Noyes and ) Sophia Dolbear were in Colchester last Fri- day Charles Martin is seriously ill Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Abell were in Colchester Wednesday attending the funeral of Dr. Myron Robinson. Effects of Civil' War. There was a large attendance at the Memorial service at the Baptist church Bunday. The pastor, Rev. J. Ayres, held the close attention of his audi- ence as he explained some of the ef- fects of the Civil war. Visitors were present from Franklin, Goshen and Exeter. Miss Addie Hallen, who is teaching in Middlebury, is in town over Sunday, the guest of friends. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Abel Edwin of Middlebury are guests at Mrs, Ida Abel's. and son week end Mr, and Mrs. Herbert Goodwin and two children spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Gooedwin Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Peck ham of Willimantic, formerly this place, attended church here Sunday. At Canterbury Exercises. Members of the Ladies of the G. A. R., Kilborn post, and Sons of Veterans attended the memorial services heid in the Methodist church at Canterbury Plains Sunday afternoon. Rev. Walter Gibbs, pastor of Central Village church delivered the address. Monday evening a number of friends hung Miss Florence Baker a May bas- ket. A lively chase followed and when all were caught a delightful evening was spent with games, music, ete, The teachers and pupils of the high school pleasantly surprised Supt. John L. Chapman Tuesday evening with an immense May basket handsomely trimmed with the school colors, orange and black, After a lively chase with the help of the dog Tom, all were caught, and the evening spent play- ing games on the lawn. All had an enjoyable time. Wednesday evening about fifty mem- bers and friends of the Methodist church surprised Mr. and Mrs. Roberts with a well filled May basket. After the chase all assembled in the vestry and spent the evening playing games. How Memorial Day Was Observed. James B. Kilborn post, No. 77, G. R., James Pellett commander, had charge of Memorial day exercises, as- sisted by James B. Kilborn camp, Sons of Veterans, Fred Austin, com- mander, and Lucy Webb Haves cir- cle, Ladies of the G, A. R, Mrs. Olive Preston, president. K George R. Bliven was marshal and Rev. F. S, Bamford of Plainfleld presi- dent of the day. The line formed at Central Village town hall at 8 o%tlock and accompanied by the Moosup Na- ticnal band, proceeded to Evergreen cemetery, from there to Union ceme- tery, Moosup, then to Packer. Dinner was served at the Congregational church, Plainfield, under direction of Henry Newton. After dinner the line reformed and marched to Plainfield cemetery, then back to the church, where the closing exercises were held. Rev. Ernest Loomis, pastor of Moosup Bapti church, delivered the address, mus being furnished by the Sons of Vet- erans’ quartette and Moosup band.
