The cobwebs of twenty-three vears will be brushed from the cup Which was. presented by George W. Childs in 1879 for annual competition between the three universities. Cornell was subsequently admitted as a competitor in the races for the Childs cup, but none has been held since 1889, when the Ithacans defeated Pennsylvania by a margin of half a second. Originally the races were be- tween four-cared crews, but in 1889 the elghts were entered, and this year it will again be between the eight oared crews, PENNSY HAS FINE ATHLETIC PROSPECTS Unusually Geod Material for Track and throw over the best weight man of the east shows that Pennsylvania is likely to pick up potnts in this event, which had previously not been counted upon, With Mercer in the pole vault and broad jump, Hayeock and Bdwards in the hurdles, Burdick in the high jump and Marshall in the sprints, Pennsyl- vania has a team which looks formid- able in practically every event on the programme. Pennsylvania thinks that in Mercer, the football captain, they have the best all around track athlete in the college ranks, a man who would add strength to the American Olympic team and would be a formidable competitor for the all Tound champlonship. Mercer can run the one hundred and the two hundred and twenty yard dashes in even time; he can go close to twenty- five seconds in the low hurdles, is good on occasions for twenty-three foet in the broad jump, has frequently cteared twelve feet in the pole vault, and has a record of 49 3-5 seconds for the quarter mile. Mercer also has the necessary bufld for a weight man. Mike Murphy is still undecided as to what events he will use Mercer in. COAL AND.LUMBER.
