. l NORWICH BULLETIN, FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1912 : - 7 KEEPS UP WITH THE DEPARTMENT Ex-Chief William M. Williams in Touch With all —Equipmcnt‘ij From Hand Engines to Autos—Early Days of West.Side | Engine Co. Told by"a Former Resident. J. W. Loomis. There are few ex-fire-chiefs today who can boast of having ever been in touch with the . department from the time of (he old hand engine to the latest thirx in auto apparatus, Nor- wich has but one.living ex-firerchief, but he is active and enthusiastic over department affairs, though he is un- able to' get to as many fires now, in his 85th year, as he did when chief. William M. Willlams was one of the promincnt heads of the locai fire de- Pariment many years ago, a 1 as ane of the leading citizens ol city, ile was familiar with the old hand exn- EX-CEIEF WILLIAM M., WILLIAMS, gines urd more particularly-the jump- ers and, hose carriages. .Alter leaving tha department his interest never ceafed and he was greatly interested at the time it was ohanged to a part paid department and secured horses for the apparatus. He has ridden on some of the chemical wagons, but this week made his record thoroughly up to ddte, as he took a trip on the aute chemical on one of the practice trips. He was taken to the Jalls station, which was built during his adminis- tration, the company there being named after him and remalned the William M. Willilams Engine company until the pald company was placed there. He recalled on the occasion of this visit to the house the vast im- provement that had been made and referred to the fact that the name of the company, which was cut in stone dand placed over the door of the steam- er house had to be dome twice, "as the first one was lost in the Connecti- cut river. Ex-Chief Williams missed only a few minutes of being on the auto when the alarm of fire was sounded, in which case he would have had the experience of responding to an alarm on the auto, after being out of (he department many years.
