NORWICH BULLETIN, THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1912 Westerly's New Town Building |FAREWELL, INDIGESTION, GAS, Friday, April 15th, Date Set For Laying Corner Stone—Still- manville Residents Protest Against Too Narrow Passage- way — Post Office Equi ipment Moved to Temporary Structure Wednesday Night. joint comr on of the new buildtg and state courthouse, ¢ nnu‘nucm villlams has assured the & town | that nesday night. The owners of the old br postofiice building have been ordered to remove the building from the work will be advanced sufficient | the site of the new postoffice within for the placing of the cornerstone by the middle of April has taken the preliminary step wards observance of the event, now it i8 up to the town council or the board of trade, or both, to prepare |« for a celebration becoming the event | of 80 much importance Ao the town. Chairman James M. Pendleton, by guthority the building, has sent an in to the grand lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, to lay the cornerstone, on the afternoon of Iriday, April 15 ‘The Invitation was sent Wednesday and will be accepted, assurance to that effect having been secured in advance. The grand officers will be assisted by the local lodge of Masons, and per- haps the chapter and Knights Tem- plar will preside as separate bodies, with full regalia and banners. In connection with the removal of the grade crossing and the radical change of grade in Canal street, as @ part of the plan of railroad Improve- ments, a temporary p: ageway is be- ing provided for the accommodation of pedestrians, but no provision is made for vehicular trafiic while that mection of Canal street is closed. The residents of Stillmanville and vicinity who will be most inconvenienced by this temporary change, are planning 10 seek relief through the \\ esterly town council. The claim made that by making this temp pas- sageway ten feet wider, it would be available for teams, and without any increase over present conditions as an element of danger, and be a quite a saving of distance to teamsters. Canal street will be closed for at Jeast six months and the Stillman- ville residents have therefore decided to invite the intervention of the town council and have already held infor- mal chats on the matter with mem- bers of the council. A representative of the contractors stated that it would be impracticable to make provision for vehicles in the temporary pa geway by reason of the °p grade, but this oppesition was vith the state- sment that the 1de was not as ste D as the Pleasant street, which has been in use for years, and which will e diverted to more general use if Canal street is to be closed to vehi- cles. Some of the opponents to the closing of the street, while free to acknowl- edge that improvements cannot come without more or less inconvenience, that at least the dimunition of fire protection should be entitled to some consideration. 'With the street closed t0 vehicles there would be delay in the fire apparatug arriving at a fire 1o Stillmanville and vicinity. The postoffice parapnernalia has been moved to the temporary structure and the mail business will be tran- sacted there until the new postoffice building is completed about t\w v nence. There was rumor in circulation in Westerly that two farm hands em- ployed off East avenue, a white man and a black man, had an encounter and that the latter had shot and killed the former. This report was given credence when Chief Brown and anoth- er policeman were whisked in that di- rection in an automobile, closely fol- lowed by Dr. J. Howard Morgan, the medical examiner. It was subsequent- ly ascertained that there had been no killing by the men named, but that th(;re had been a murder of a different rature, Alpheus Eldredge, while driving along the road to Pleasant View that con- nects with the Watch Hill road near stuxet brook, discovered the head 1 baby in the road. He investigat- od and a short distance beyond found the trunk of- the body and the two hands severed from the wrists, but the arms were missing. Mr. Eldredge went to the nearest telephone and re- ported the find to Chief Brown, who In urn notified the medical examiner and the proeeeded at once to the scene.
