i e ———— S TS John P. Barstow embarked in business here in 1846 under the firm name of Backus & Barstow. A small and conservative business was done, but soon increased until it became an important depot for supplying the wants of customers throughout Ezstern Connecticut. In 1876, Mr. Barstow included in his partner- ship, Frank H. Smith and George S. Byles (the latter his nephew), and the business was then con- ducted under the firm name of John P. Barstow & Co., and the accompanying photograph represents the building as it appeared that time. These two men succeeded to the business at Mr. Barstow’s death in 1893, and have increased and enlarged the business, and at the present time employ about thirty skilled and competent workmen in their various departments, which includes Tin, Sheet, Iron and Copper Work, Steam, Hot Water Heating, Sanitary Plumbing in all its branches, Furnace and Ventilating Piping and General Roofing and Repair Work.
