FLONZALEY QUARTETTE SHOWED GREAT VERSATILITY Academy Musical First Number of An evening of unalloyed pleasure, which will linger long in the memory of ali admirers of beautiful music, was meteG out on Friday evening (o the lerge audiencs filling Slater hall and overflowing into the annex. The Flonzaley quartette adds another to :be long list uf triumpbs scored by the promoters of the Academy musical courses and proves. that the present season is to be the équal of any of its prodecessors, “Perfect” was the ad- jective used by many of the audience. The first notes showed the beauty of tone each of the players was capable of extracting from his particular in- strument. Then, too, they scemed to have taken Hamlet's adiice to the players and give the music “trippingl frum their fingers” with a deftness an delicacy of touch that was enchant- ing. And the perfect harmony of ithe four instruments showed a nigher skill than that of the fingers; and a deep artistic insight into the real beauties musical composition. The mem- s of the guartette are: First vio- Adolto Betti; second violin, Al- frea Pochow; viola, Blgo Ara; violon- cello, Iwan D'Archambeau. T'he audience followed them with de- light through the four movements of Haydn's Quartette in G major. The second number was a beautiful selec- {ion, Sonata a tre. for two violins and ‘cello, composed by Guiseppe Sammar- Gni, ‘who Aled in 1740. The _three movements were given a fine render- ing and recelved repeated applause from an enthusiastic audience. The climax was reached In the quartetie's two parts of the work by Maurice Ra The fine execution of the second of ihese was much appreciated and to the delight of the audience they were rewarded with its repetition. Threo movements of Boccherini's Quartette in A major were charmingly executed as a fitting finish to a programme of great merit and intense pleasure. The Flonzaleys plaved with o. beauty of tone and security of execution such as few quartettes c&n even approach. The programme was well arranged for variety and was nelther too long nor too short. The versatility of scvle shown hy the players in contrasting numbers was remarkable, and their conception of each work was adequate On the whole, the performance was both brilliant and satisfying.
