A meeting of the delegates from the Prison Been Quiet at Jail— Bertram Gager Spencer, found guilty of first degree murder for the killing of Miss Martha B. Blackstone. a Springfleld school teacher, passed Sun- day very quietly in the hospital see- tion of the Hampden county jail at Springfield. Incontrast to his shriek ing, weeping and shuddering out- breaks at the trial, there were no demonstrations by Spencer Sunday. In fact, he has heen entirely Im since the jury announced the rdict of first degree murder Saturday morning. Spencer had no visitors Sunday. TI jailers said he appeared to have pass ed a restful night. and in the forenoon read the papers with evident interest. Will Go to Supreme Court. * Spencer will remain at fhe jail there until the supreme court passes on the bill of exceptions, which it was an- nouneced his attorney will file. As the supreme court does not sit until next April, Spencer will not hear sentence passed upon him until that time. Wife Called Saturday. Following th verdict of zullts, early Saturday morning, it was reported at the Springfield jail that Spencer made no outbreaks, which made the trial so dramatic. Fis onlv visitoes during the day were the faithful wife and some of the members of her family, who went down to the jail to offer what comfort they could to him. Mother a Nervous Wreck. Spencer's mother, who was taken to the home of Dr. Elizabeth Young My- ers, on St. James avenue, was a com plete nervous wreck, and it thay be some days before she is able to leav the house. She stood out bravely dur- ing the tfial, although those who watched her on Friday could see that sShe was on the verse of a nervous col- lapse. She did not remain to hear the charge of the court, but went to Dr. Young's house at 7.30. She was not informed of the verdict until about 7 oclock Saturday morning, as Dr. Morthér Breaks = making special may be wal | The fact has become known that be- fore the trial there was a discussion among the alienists of the destrability | of holding a conference of the experts | on both sides for the purpose of con- sidering a recommendation of a sec- ond_degree verdict for Spencer. The reasons assigned for the proposed conference were the large | { saving of money to the commonwealth | made possidle by avoiding the long. trial and the uncertainty about the le- | gal sanity of Spencer. None of Spencers y was with him at the time the v':flt’l was given. | Spencer’s voung wife and his sister, | who had been with him all evening, | remained in an adjoinning room at the request of the court officers, who fear- ed an outbreak on the part of the prisoner. Mrs. Spencer almost col- lapsed when word of the verdict was brought to her, but she quickly recov- | ered and went into the court room again, where she greeted her husband almi=, conversed with him a few mo- ments 'and went through the ordeal | of parting without any demonstraton | being made on the part of either hus- Dban or wife. The report of How- | ard's- safety came to Dr. Dart, a rela- tive by marriage of the family of Stephen Barnes, who owned the power beat. The vessel is said to have been bound for a Nova Scotia port. The strange part of the report is that How- ard himseif has sent no word. and no !cne definitely knows the source of the report now currenf. It is recalled thac 2 week ago Friday there was a three- | masted schooner tacking off the harbor at Niantic. At that time Howard missing. » Musicale at Haile Club.
