HOUSE AND BARN i BURNED TO GROUND John MaeDougall’s Home at Plain Hill Destroyed Thursday Afternoon—Ne Water to Fight Fire—Caused by Des fective Chimney. One of the worst fires in several years in this vicinity occurred at 4.30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the foot of Plain Hill, near Huntington ave- nue, destroying the dwelling house #nd buildings on John MacDougall's place. There had been no fire in the stove since 11 o'clock in the morning. In the afternoon eve > was away. The man emploved on the place returned after 4 o'clock and found flames com- inz through the roof, Smoke and flames could be eeen from Vergason hill and by people on the troiley and for a_long distance in other directions. Many gathsred quickly and worked hight, day and Sundays, at the loeal electric light plant, the changes have been completed to such a point that the new turbine generator, which s of 750 k. w. capacity, has been tried out and found to .work nicely and will be started this morning to run through the day. On Thursday it was given a three hours’ tryéut. f it was started it was syhelironized with the other engities running. Graduslly ihe load was put on the tufbine uhtil .t had the total load of the station and it was found to run very mice There was one drip pipe which did not work just right, causing the water to back up and making it necessary to shut down the machine. This was no fault of the turhins, however, and plumb=rs were at work Thursday night fixing this 5o that the machine will be ready this morning. Shewed Well on Tryout. With the rated capacity of the ma- chine 750 k. w. at 80 per cefit. power factor there was on the machihz at the teyout 600 k. wi., on 60 to 65 per cent power factor, which is doing well for preliminary tryout. Representing the General Electric company, which furnished the turbine, is Jacob Benzenger of Schenectady who came on to get the turbine started | and in running order. The two engines at the local plant nave been carrying the load for monthe If they had had a serious break in that time the plant would have been disabled, in spite of all that couid have been done. Superintendent Bogu= states that he trusts that the danger is over fiow, but there remains much ‘o be done yet. i 8witehboard Nearly Ready. The switchboard changes are nearin, coitipletion, but there is much whiel cantiot be done until the new turbine is running, so thgt it can be dependad upon, so that changes to the other en- gines can be made. This work has been done under the supervision of C. S. Monroe of the General RElectric company, and the fact that all changes have been made and are being made without interruption to the service speaks highly of his ability. The old generator used on the belted engine, which was discarded last spring, is now being equipped as a syncronous condenser. New Motor Generator Set. A new motor generator set has been installed and was started two days 1go so that the steam driven exciter which past cam be shut down. The steam driven exciter will be fixed up and kept as an emergency auaxiliary. There has been a great increase in the demands on the plant in the past vear. The power load is just about double what it was a vear ago and now in the afternoon it s over 25 jer greater than the evening load.
