NEW LONDON COUNTY UNCASVILLE Montville Grange 1 tes Class of Six—James E. Murphy’s Boat Sunk In River by Opening Seacock—Mrs. R."G. Hooper Passes Eightieth Mi stone. Montville Grange, P. of H., at its regular meeting held Wednesday eve- ning had a good attendance and the first and second degree was worked on a class of six candidates: Jerome ‘W. House, Henry Church, Miss Min- nie Nichols, Misses Winnie and Vera Bartlett, Miss Cochrane, Miss Jennie Switzer. The grange will hold a lawn party at the home of W. W. Woodworth's. The grange also had considerable talk in regard to a picnic, but being unable to decide upon a date for hold- ing it so was put over till the next meeting. Arm Broken Playing Croquet. Olive LaBounty, young son of J. A. LaBounty, while playing croquet re- cently, in some way tripped on a wi et throwing him to the ground, stri ing the ground so hard his left arm was broken at the elbow. Medical at- tendance was called and the fracture set. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gilberts of Rock- ville arrived Friday to spend a few weeks with Mr. Gilberts’ mother. ‘Modern Woodmen Held Interesting Session. There was a large attendance at the meeting of Cochegan Camp, Mod- ern Woodmen of America. The lead- ing feature of the meeting was an en- tertaining account of a visit to the National Convention of Woodmen held at Buffalo, given by Christopher Col- lins of New London lodge of Wood- men. After the address cake and ice cream was served. The camp has no- tice to attend the meeting of the state camp held at Ocean Bes 2 Mrs. John Cozgshzll is entertaining her granddaughter Miss Mary Baker of Willimantic. Miss Anna Shaffer of Baltic is £pending a week with her brother TRalph Shaffer. Principal Murphy’s Boat Sunk. James B, Murphy of Dover, N. H., principal of Palmer Memorial school, is having ill luck with his launch. Mr, Murphy has, in his leisure hours dur- ing the winter, built a 35 foot power boat, launching it a few days before the Yale-Harvard boat race with the intention of returning to his home in Dover im it. While giving it a trial cruise in the Thames river pre- paratory to starting Tor home, he was unfortunate te bend the shafting thus disabling it. Finding it would take a longer time to repair the break Mr, Murphy abandoned the idea of return- ing home by water and went by car. The launch for keeping during the summer was anchored In the river near the Robertson boathouse, al- though not entirely submerged, has sunk to the river bettom. Mr. Murphy was In town this week and has bailed it out and has had it towed to new auarters for the remainder of the sea- son. Upon investigation it was found that some one had opened the sea- cock, <Considerable damage has been done the interior. Albert Myers and Jacob Savine of Chesterfield were before Justice of the Peace William Smiddy Fricay charged with keeping unregistered dogs. Both cases were nolled on payment of cost, both agreeing to license their dogs. Ray Woodmansee and party, fishing in Gardner’s lake Monday, had a suc- cessful catch of bass. Stedman was on Wednesday, Aug. 16th, the scene of a pretty wedding, when their eldest daughter. Carolyn Mabelle, was united in marriage to Walter Reith of Wester! The ceremony took placa at 12 o'clock in the presence of about 50 relatives and friends. Rev. . M. Hollister officiating. The ring ser vice was used. The bride was prettil attired in white and was attended 4 {her sister, Mrs. Latham N. Bentles, who was gownad in pale groom wore the conventional Helen Stedman two little nieces of the bride. acted as flower girls. After the ceremony a dainty luncheon was sarved, after which the happy couple departed on a short wedding trip to Bethlehem, N. H. Mrs. Reith has been a successful teach- er for many years. NIANTIC Clarence W. Thompson Made Trial Flight—11!; Foot Shark Caught— Musical Was Enjoyed—Notes of Pine Grove and the Vacationists. Gray, returned to her Joseph Vietz, one of the local fisher- men caught a large shark Monday near Black Point. The fish weighed 500 pounds and was 111 feet long. The shark was cut up and placed in barrels before being sent to the New York market. A musical was given Sunday even- ing at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Hilliar in Main street by Prof. Knowlton's® orchestra. The fol- ing enjoved the entertainment: Charles Perine. George B. Field, George Macroy, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Many music lovers eongregate about the grounds to enjoy the treat. Trial Flight in Bipiane. Clarence W. Thompson, chauffeur for O. A. Buzzell made a trial flight Wedncsday afternoon at the military grounds before a largé crowd of peo- ple from the grove and Niantic. Mr. Thompson uses a Curtiss biplane. George W. Hiil has been trimming some of the pines at the grove, mak- ing a decided improvement. Mrs. Agnes Lloyd has had a new board walk laid, fronting her cottage on Wells street. Miss Hannah Mallory and brother, Leonard of New London, are guests of their grandparents, Captain and Mrs. W. H. Barker in Orchard street. Miss Nannie Wight of New London spent the day Monday at the Mohawk cottage, Mrs. A. F. The town officials are repairing the schoolhouses in districts No. 9 and No. 10 for the fall. opening of schools in September. The buildings are being painted outside with two coats of white paint, which will be a great im- provemeant. . The song sparrows have ceased their sweet music and the robins have thus early nearly, all disappeared. Large flocks of swallows are seen daily and are about to leave us. A whippoorwill is still heard. A number from this place went by auto to Storrs collieze to attend the grange field day meeting held therz on Tuesday. The wells are going dry. Some are hauling water from Yantic river and the Jordan brook for domestic pur- poses. The Literary club met on Wednes- day evening. The club is planning for a day’'s outing at Gardner Lake. Pleasant Surprise For New Baptist Pntor—-Fun-nl of George Green— teen Candidates Initiated. On Saturday afternoon the Jewett City Rovers visited town and defeated the local team by the score of 8 to 6. The locals put up a good game holding the visitors without a score until the sixth after which they went to pieces and lost the game by wild throwing. Pachaug Grange held an outing on Saturday afternoon at the summer home of Mr. Waiter Tanner at Beach Pond. A large number were in attend- ance. ‘The funeral of George Green took place from his late home on Main street on Saturday afternoon and was attended by relatives and friends. The officiated. The bearers were Messrs. John Potter, Charles Anderson, George Macomber and Frank Gardner. Mrs. Henry Gardner, a sister of deceased, and her daughter Etta of East Lyme, ‘were in attendance, Several from here attended the camp meeting at Greene station on Sunday. State Organizer James J. McGrath of Providence, R. I, visited Court Ad- vance, No. 3836, 1. .O. F., on Monday evening, when sixteen candidates were initiated. Mr. Quayle, the new pastor of the Bap- tist church, was invited to the chapel and on arrival. there was surprised when Mrs. Haslan, on behalf of, those present, presented r. Quayle with a sum of money and a large list of sup- plies. Mr. Quaylé thanked those pres- ent for their generosity. A pleasant evening was afterward enjoyed, re- freshments being served.
