Bath Street, SAVED (O’BRIEN New York, Aug. 15.—Sam Langford of Buston, with an advantage of about ten pounds in weight, fought Philadel- phia “Jack” O'Brien to a’standstill in four and one-half rounds tonight at the Twentieth Century club. Referee Charley White prevented a ockout, when he stopped the bout in the mid- dle of the ffth round. O’'Brien was practically out from the effects of a hard left hook to the jaw and had to_be helped to his corner. It was the old story of a clever game boxer pitted against a hard hit- ting fighter, and from the start the Bosten heavyweight had O'Brien’s measure _taken. Langford’s biows were on the sledge hammer order, while none of O'Brien's swings and hooks had sufficient steam behind them to bother the colored man. The pace was fast from the beginning and O'Brien showed clever footwork and scientific boxing. At the end of the second round O'Brien was bleeding from nose and mouth and was cautioned frequently for holding. Langford put O'Brien twice to the' floor in the third round, O’Brien_taking nine seconds on the second fall. O'Brien was weak but managed to stall along until the bell zave him a respite. . There was no question as te O'Brien's gameness as he took a lot of punish- ment in the fourth and was figting hard in the fifth until Langford landed the finishing blows. ELENA CLOSES SEASON WITH GOOD LEAD. Big Racing Schooner Has Defeated All Rivals in Majority of Events. Newport, R. L, Aug. 15.—The plac- ing out of commission immediately of the 'big schooners Elena and West- ward, to be followed shortly /by the Irolita and Enchantress, brings to a some what early close one of the most interesting seasons of large yacht rac- ing since the last America’s cup series of 1903. It was hoped that this quartette of vachting ‘“dreadnaughts” might meet in a suppplementary series off Sandy Hook, but both Commpodore Morton F. Plant of the Elena and A. S. Cochran of the Westward have decided _that they have had sufficlent sport for this year and will postpone further trials of speed until next season. The two months’' racing cfoses with the Elena in the lead, altbough in the past two weeks her margin of the | Westward shows a difference of only 40 seconds in 231 miles of racing. Yet the Plant yacht met the Cochran boat in cight contests and defated her five times. The Elena met the Irolita in seven teen races and won 14 times, while the Elena defeated the Enchant- ress in eight out of nine races. NORWICH MEN HOODOOS ? New York, Aug. 15.—Some of the improvement’ manifested by the stock markat ‘yesterday was lost in the course of today's operations, the list showing a heavy or irregular tendency throughout. In the alternate declines and rallies which marked the day it was clear that some sort of a conflict was in process, that the market had become what is technically known as “two-sided.” It s€emed to have de- ;’e!nped into a purely professional af- air. One of the most disconcerting fea- tures of the existing situation is that it has produced very little naw busi- ness. This is not altogether surprising, however, inasmuch as some of the more conservative commission houses have openly discoliraged investment buying at this time, on the ground that conditions continua unsatisfactory where they are not absolutely uncer- tain. Even the speculative brokerage firms declare that very little marginal trading from outside sources has fol- lowed the declins, which is ecited as additional proof that not only was the professional element almost entirely concerned in the recent reaction, but in the partjal recovery as well. The dull- nass which settled over today's mariet after the first few hours was strongly reminiscent of the earlier summer pe- riod, when complete stagnation ruled for days at a time and net results were utterly negligibla. There was this dif- ference, however, that each succeeding spell of inanition today was followed by a moderate selling movement in which early gains were invariably lost. Union Pacific was again the focus around which tha list largely con- verged, and its erratic movements in- dicated that it was still under the in- fluence of liquidation as well as bear pressure. With United States Steel, which was relatively firm, it comprised tha great bulk of the day’s business. Reading was heavy, partly as a result of the decline in Lehigh Valley, which made severa! ineffectual efforts to ad- vance. The one marked feature of the final hour was an abrunt drop of mor: than three points in Texas compan: and sudden weakness in the copper shares. The closing was heavy with a preponderance of net loss, including Tnion Pacific, which again sold almost at its low price of the day. Canadian Pacific’s annual statement shows an increase of $4,200,000 in to- tal ircome, despite an increase of $6,- 200,000 in operating expenses. Louis- ville and Nashville for the year re- ported a loss of $2,000,000 in net reve- nues, which is fully accounted for by an increase of almoSt $3,400,000 in op- eating expenses. The bond market was steady save for a sharp decline of 2 1-2 points in New York. New Haven and Hartford converiikles. Total sales, par value, amounted to $1,645.000.
