-WESTERLY HAS A_DARING BUBBER “Skete” Allen, Former Baseball Player, Fo‘u_gh: With Jailer and Escaped Half-Hour After Being Locked Up For Thefts—Support of Local Hospital is Again an Agitated Question—Automobiles Steering Gear Went Wrong. Thomas, alias “Skete” Allen, the well known local baseball player, who h: developed into 2 highwayman and tili rolyber, he who robbed the Legelis boy in an ice cream wagon last Tuesday night in Lower Pawcatuck, and who robbed the money drawer in the Rias- ca store in Mechanic_street Wednes- day, was captured at Watch Hill Sun- day night by Deputy Sheriff William H. Casey and locked up in the Paw: tuok police station, left in charge of a keeper, and soon thereafter made his escape. Since the highway robbery the police of the two adjoining villages, Pawcatuck and Westerly, have been on the lookout for Allen, and Sheriff Cas- ey has been on his trail most of the time. Last Friday night Sheriff Casey re- ceived information that Allen had been seen In the vicinity of the Halcyon house at Watch Hill. In order to es- cape observation, the sheriff went to Osbrook in his autemobile and then went by boat across Little Narragan- sett bay to the Halcyon house, only to learn that Allen had been there, but had gone about fifteen minutes without knowledge of the _sh coming, but in order to get rid of the objectionable caller the bartender told Allen that the police were after him and advised him to get out, and he| went. The sheriff made vain search for Allen in the inity. Sunday night Sheriff Casey made another visit to Watch Hill, and had reason to believe that Allen was in the Lanphere restaurant. He placed an assistant at the rear and another in front, and then went into the restau- rant, and was informed By the pro- priefor that Allen was not in the place. The sheriff then went out of the front door and spotted Allen in a room in the rear. Allen started on a run through the dining room, but was cap- tured by Sheriff Casey Lefore he could reach the street. The sheriff hand- cuffed Allen and took him by automo- Mle to the Pawcatuck police Allen had two revolvers, which She Casey took possession of. After taking Allen’s coat and hat from him he was put in a cell. Thomas Totten was placed in charge, Sheriff Casey glying him strict orde: not to open the cell door under any circumstance and to keep a close watch on_the prisoner. The sheriff had not been away from the station fifteen minutes when Allen agked for a bucket, such as are usu in prison cells of that déscription. Totten complied with the request. He raised the lock-bar to the cell and was about to partially open the door to hand the bucket in, when Allen forced the door wide open, and then Allen put up a fight for freedom. Just the door opened Allen struck Tot- ten squarely in the face and the men ol . Outstde the building fully one Rundred young men and boys had congregated, and through the barrel windows the fight could be seen. Totten shouted to those outside to summon Sheriff Casey, and a young fellow did start for the officer, but he was tripped #and warned to mind his own business. Those on the outside shouted . “Give it to him, Skete,” “Seak it to him, Skete™ “Kill him, Skete,” and the like. AN this time the men inside were in a flerce strugsle, during which Tot- ten's left foot got caught in the runzs of a chair. Allen got hold of the chair and twisted Totten's leg. He then zot hold of a purt of a billiard cue happened to be near, and with th struck Totten over the head seve times and rendered him unconsciou: Allen then relieved Totten of pocketbook, which contained only cents and made his escape. The doors of the building were locked and the main windows barred. But just over the row of iron cells was a small oper window, used for ventilation. Allen climbed to the top of the cells, went throngh this window and dropped feet to the ground, surrounded by & blg crowd of his sympathizers. They cheered as “Skete” scaled several yard Tences out on to Wewton avenue, and was far distant before Sheriff Casey learned of his escape. Nonme of the crowd followed and none mase effort to intercept Allen. He had not been in the lockup half an hour. Totten's injuries consist of a sprain- ed ankle. three cuts in the top of the head and a few scratches on the face and neck, and his right hand shovs | the impress of Allen’s teeth. He say that Allen, if recaptured, will she some signs of the encounter, and de- clares that his foot had not becoma entangled in the chair Allen would not have escaped. Although Westerly has a completely equipped hospital of private owner- ship, emergency cases are sent to hos- ipitals in Providence, New London and Norwich, for treatment, which is due to lack of support of the local institu- | tion. Dr. John T. Champlin about two | years ago established and equipped a hospital on his premises in expectation | that it wouM receive local support. The hospital has been leased on iwo occa- [ sions to tramed murses, but as the 6x- | penses were greater than the receipts | | they were oblized to abandon the pro- ect, and now the hospital is only used | 1in special cases where the nurses are engaged byv the patients, or members | of their families. There is evidently lack of united ef- fort to maintain the hospital on the| part of local physicians, and perhaps for reasons that are not plain to the public, and in consequence emergency cases are taken. elsewhere for treat ment. The Westerly hospital receives no state or town aid and is not self- suppcrting. it has been suggested in the cause of humanity that the Westerly town council take this hospital matter under advisement and make effort to devise some plan with the owner whereby thc local physicians would give their unit- ed support to the institution, the town to furnish the necessary financial for emergency cases, whenever nece 'S It is believed that were the town to pay the remtal, which is said to be a small percentage on the amount in- vested, that the imstitution could be kept in successful operation by trained | nurses, with the earnest assistance of | Jocal physicians. It has been further suggested that a joint committee of the town council and the Westerly| Medical association might be able tol bring about the desired result, and| make the Westerly hospital one that would be deserving of the name and semi-public in general character.
