There was not a hiteh anywhere, a remark- able thing, and the applause was fre- quent and the curtain calls numerous. Mr. Stedman 1 played the part be- fore, yet was given no time to thor- oughly recall the lines or to familiarize himself with the changes in the action of the play that every director makes. The Petlicoat Sheriff, a thoroughly western story. entertained a very large and appreciative audience at each per- formance at the Breed yesterday, and $he well chosen programme served to interest all. This bright story tells of a woman with political ambitions who is elected sheriff. and almost in the performance of her first duty she s captured herself by the criminal and made captive. Her husband, a former sheriff, finally discovers her in an old hut and releasing her takes her place, waiting until the villain re- turns. The husband captures him, and turning him over to the woman sheriff makes her receive the honor, but the econscience of the woman is troubled, and she reluctantly turns over her dge to her husband, admitting that e didn’t want to be sheriff any more.
