The first cotton mill was established in India 60 years ago. Ten years later |, the number had increased to 12, con- taining 328,000 spindles. According to the Bombay Millowners' association returns to June 30 last, there were 243 mills, with 20 others in course of erection. The number of spindles had risen, in round numbers, to §,200,000, and ‘the looms to $2,700; the hands employed had increased to 234,000 and the cotton consumed to about 2,000,000 hales. The capital in the industry is $60,000,000. KFor the year ending March 81, 1910, the product of the India cotton mills was 27,364,000 pounds of yarn and 228,728,000 pounds, or 962,463,000 yards of woven cloths, There were exported 2 yarn and 94,- 100,000 yards of cloth. In 11 years the production of cloths has increased 133 per cent. by weight and 193 per cent. #y length. But imports of plece goods increased 63 per cent., nearly all com= ing from the United Kingdom.
