WESTERLY’S FIRE CHIEF MOVES Gets Nearer the Hub to be Nearer the Firehouse—Wo- man’s Exchange Reports Bigger Demand than Supply of Foodstuifs During 1910—Taking on New Hands Daily at Granite Works. G ‘W. Beverly, who died Friday & his home, Glenview farm, Seekonk, Mass., aged 67, was trainer of Prince Aler Noontld‘ and other famous | speeders. He was one of the most widely known horsemen of New Eng- Jand and had bred, trained and kept | many racers. He had conducted the Glenview farm for the past seven | years, three years ago buying the| piace from Earl Potter, by whom he | was employed as manager. During that ttme Princa Alert spent several winters at the stock farm. Mr. Bev- | erg leaves his wife and one son. e formerly conducted a livery and | sale stable in Main street, Westerly, in | the rear of the building now occupied | A. B. Colline, and the Beverly sign | b, {ll remains on the building he for- merly leased. During th st two years there has been consi dor::lc criticism that was not wholly justifiable against Chief | Engineer Samuel G. Cottrell because he lived on Quarry Hill, far removed from the centra] firehouse and the ‘business center, and in consequance could not be among the firat to arrive at % fire and direct the movements of the firemen. His critics seemed to be indful of the fact that the chief four assistants, any one of whom s qualified to take charge pending the atgival of the chief, or that in the ure of the chief or his assistants | ’ mrrive at the outset, the rules of the | Zew dietrict provide that the senior of- fieer of the fire companies act as chief. R0 there was not much causs for eriticism against the chief because he was not among the first to arrive at the fire. The chief had a t:lephone installed in his Quarry Hill home and special arrangements made with the telephone change to call him at night for every fire alarm, and he never left hom= to &s to his work without telling how he could be reached by telephone, in or- der to respond to the call for fire with | the least possible dzlay. However, to be of more eatisfying service to the residents of the West- erly fire district. and 1n order to be in closer touch with the firshouse and | the care of the fire alarm system, he | has moved from Quarry Hill to the John Perrige honsas in Granite street which is loeated about 1 thoueand feet from the centra] firzchouse.
