Dynamite For Los Angeles Plant BELIEVED TO BE'OUTCOME OF LABOR TROUBLES. THE LEWELLYN IRON WORKS Partly Wrecked Early Sunday Morning —Night Watchman Was the Only Person Injured, He but Slightly. Los ' Angeles, Cal,” Dec. 25.—The Lleweliyn Iron Works were partly wrecked by an explosion, presumably of dynamite, early today. The explo- sion tore out the front of the building, smashed windows for more than a bloc and awakened persons more than two miles away The night watchman was slightly injured. Perpetrators Unknown. ‘Who placed the supposed charge of dynamite "is unknown to the police,. but it is believed to have been the out- come of general labor tr which the Llewellyn compan: involved. A hole eighteen inches-deep and about six feet in_@iameter bears witness to the place of the explosion. Abont seven ve feet of the front of the main huilding, a three story frame structure. wa shot to pieces and its contents piled together in ruin. The hea machinery of the building seems to have escaped injury. Night Watchman Slightly Injured. J. E. Asbury, a watchman, was seat- ed in the office about thirty feet from the center of the explosion. He was buried under a mass of debris, but was dragged out by & policeman passing in front of the office. With the exception of o cut on the right hand and an abrasion of the scalp and face, he was unhurt. “I saw a flash and heard a report like the crack-of a whip,” said Police man Cahill, “and next the front of the building seemed to crumble and the air seemed full of debris. T called out: ‘Is there anyone in the building?' and heard a ery for help. I found Asbury and draggenl him from under the ru- ins.” Active in Fight Against Unions. The ILlewellyn Iron Works has long been active in the fight against union labor in this city, and is one of the companies invoived. in he matal workers' strike, which went into effect June 1. The strike was called originally to enforce a demand for an eight hour day for all metal workers and a uni- form wage of fifty cents an hour. It began on notice from San Francisco that employers there had made con- cessions on condition that they, should not thereby be placed at a disadvant- age in cowpetition with non-union Las Angeles firms. Police Working on Labor Theory. Officials of the Liewllyn company are of the opinion that .he supposed effort to destroy their plant is the out- growth of their differences with labor, and the police are working on this the- pparently the police have no def- inite clie. In view of the Los Ange- les Times outrage, in which 21 men were killed last October, and the ex- ceeding bitterness of the metal work- ers' strike today's explosion created the greatest interest. The grand jury is expected to hand in its report on the Times at any day. CHRISTMAS AT THE VATICAN. Pope Received Greetings and Messages From All Over the Woerid. Rome, Dee. “hristmas day pas: ed off quietly at the Vatican. whera Pius X., after pontificating at early mass before specially mvited guests, spent the morning quietly in his pri- vate apartments, with his sisters and his niece. Later he saw some of his household and the secretary of state, Cardinal Merry del Val, who wish to renew their grestings. but all of the audiences werc of a private char- acter. His holiness received messages an | greetings from sovereigns, heads of gtates, high eccleslastics and promi- nent laymen from all over the world. He personally read each of these, and will himself reply to many of them. At court there were no official re- ceptions, hut the presents of the king and queen to their respective house holds were distributed, and the fam- ily of their majesties, now comprising four children, had a tree, over which the joy was as great as in any humble home of the kingdams.
