Had the democratic managers in the FFourth ward been on their job and furnished a man to tabulate the count with the republican tabulator, the mis- take that gave cause for Cyrus G. Beckwith to demand a recount for rep- resentative would not have occurred. The tabulator made the error while copying the original tally sheet, plac~ ing votes to the credit of Mr. Crandall that belonged to Mr. Beckwith, trans- posing the total vote. The original sheet is in the sealed box with the ballots, and the copy was made for {filing with the moderator of the Third | ward who made known the result of the vote of the city from the face of the returns. The counters have ac- knowedged the error, but after allow. Mr. Beckwith the votes that are due, Lucius E. Whiton, the repub- is still in the lead. This is not satisfying to Mr. Beckwith who claims that the ballots cast for him should be so counted officially, and in order to do this he must take his case %o the legislature and contest Mr. | Whiton's seat as that is the only way { it is possible for him to zet a recount | and have the vote correctly announc Had the democrats furnishéd a tabu- lator, as a check on the republican unter, and vice versa, such an error could not have occurred, and there would have been no doubt as to the election of Mr. Whiton. Now that an error has been made by the board of counters, of which the tabulator is a part, Mr. Beckwith takes the stand that other errors might have been made that would change the result as announced on election night and that he and not Mr. .Whiton would rep sent in part the city of New London at the next session of the legi m the other hand the counter that when the original ts j taken from the ballot box found that the count has been correc and that the ballots will tally corre with the sheet prepared by the tabu- lator, and will show beyond doubt that | the error was made in the copying. These raids were made by the local police department and without the aid of the state police or the Committee of Fifteen and it is semi-officially an- nounced that these raids are to be con- tinued until the city is cleansed along these particular lines and that there will be no playing of favorites. It'is denied that any of the recent raids were made in a revengeful spirit in which politics played a part, and that the future raids will demonstrate clearly that there is not a scintillation of truth in any such talk. Action was taken upon formal complaint being made in each instance, but it is hinted that in the future such work will be included in the general orders to the police. Warning is given that in future raids upon places of the class defined that all who are in the places visifed by the police will be arrested and haled into court and share the punishment with the owners or managers of the places, where the participate ip the violation of law. Judge Court’ has openly stated the standing of the court | in regard to the gambling places and has ordered the police to bring into ourt the patrons of all such places as well as the proprietors, and it is pre- sumed this order is applicable to raids upon houses of shady reputation and drinking clubs. liguors To have public_improvement with out more or less inconvenience is still among the impossibilities, hence it is that the trolley cars and much of the vehicular traffic is diverted from Bank street while that thoroughfare is being repaved. As the paving blocks, half the regulation size are being laid upon a concrete be and grouted with ce- ment the work is necessarily slower than the old method that prevailed in New London, when the large-gized pavers were simply laid in a bed of sand. But the majority of the people do not seem to take this fact into con- sideration and the kicking against the slowness of the work in Bank street has become chronic with them. Prom- ise is made, however, that the work will be completed in another week and that then the trolley cars will go by the regular instead of the Truman street route and that Bank street will once again resume its accustomed bus- iness activity. When completed it will, according to the contractor, be one of the very best city roads in the country, as he de- clares there is nothing better in the road building line than the Bank street job. The road will be of even surface and almost everlasting, and will be in good condition when the vitrified brick paving, such as is in lower Bank, State, Main and Washington treets, will havé reached the end of its usefulness. Bank street has been recurbed and will have new sidewalks from State to Howard str but it is probable that the laying of the granolitic sidewalks will be delayed, from Golden street down until early spring, new walks having already been laid as far as Golden street, on the west side of Bank street. Tt may be that the new walks in State street will not be completed until next spring by reason of the cold weather and the attendant frost that {eAgfi l:f Sp rm ]21 PRIME RIB ROAST 2%-14¢ w |4%e w 12%¢ 2%2¢ BEST ROLLED ROAST w 12 . 10 Small, Lean PORK SHOULDERS Best LAMB CHOPS Rib or Loin Fancy Sugar Cuted SMOKED SHOULDERS Ib, FOREQUARTERS PANMEB: 2 o Fresh Cut HAMBURG STEAK Home-made SAUSAGE MEAT Cran- berries qt. 8¢ Sweet Potatoes peck 25¢ 2000 Pounds STEA SATURDAY SPECIALS “BUY WHERE YOUR DOLLAR BUYS THE MOST"*® YOUR PURCHASES DELIVERED FOR FIVE CENTS Granulated SUGAR 20 1bs. $1.00 23 Ibs. $1.0 3 == 25¢ - b |2%G SWEET RUSSET ORANGES Pure Lard = = = [). 14¢ |Best Gompound = 1b. 12¢ Large Dark Bromn EGGS doz. 27¢ | lilid Meat OYSTERS gt. 33¢ Large Yellow ONIONS - 4 qts. All that has been done to.make the old Lewis grove into a park was the removal of the underbrush and the making of circuitous walks and drives through the massive trees, and the planting here and there in artistic yle plants that are hardy and appro- priate. The park has of course been cleared of all that did not aid in the ornamentation, and an attractive en- constructed. comparatively few people 2 London have visited the re; eautiful place, on account of the lack f convenience in getting there. eral years ago the trolley officials gave assurance to Senator Brandegee and the park commissioners that a loop would be built from the Norwich- of Montville road to the main line of the New but With Riy London system in Main street, th has not yet materialized. rolley road ~accommodations side park would share popularity h Ocean beach, and Williams and Memorial parks would be of secondary consideration. With Pawc:kuck and Westerly hlv- ? full complement of licensed liquor oons there is aiready an appreciable falling off in the business of some of the saloons in New London, who count- ed among their customers many regu- lar visitors from the two places named as well as from the borough of licensed Stonington and that part of Mystic {1ving within the town of Stonington. It was the custom of many men of drinking habits to visit New Londen saloons, take a cargo aboard and also a supply for home use, making the rip as often as their finances would per- mit, and this has ‘been going on for the past five years. Now these same men can get all the booze they want in their home town without incurring the expense and inconvenience of com- ing to New London. While this patronage was divided to an extent still the bulk of the trade went to a few favored saloons, and in one in- sance the proprietor of a local saloon says that the change has caused a shrinkage in his Saturday ‘night busi- ness alone of fifteen dollars from the discontinuance of trade from residents of the east side of the Thames river.
