Had to Take Out Licenses. Ten representatives of a big soap manufacturing house took out licenses to do business in Putnam Friday aft- ernoon. The form of licensing itiner ant workers which was adopted two years ago is being rigorously enforced by the police, and earns the city a sur- prising amount of revenue. A number of the members of Quine- baug lodge, F. and A. M., have arran ed to go to Woodstock this (Saturday) evening to witness the conferring of the third degree on candidates there. Newton A. public library committee, makes it clear that it is to be a difficult propo- sition to maintain the library under present conditions with only the re- duced appropriation of $1,000 available from the town. Last year this appro- priation amounted to $1,200. Last vear also $1,336.92 was expended. Wit the income from the Green fund, which will amount to about $40. and the sum re- ceived from fines, the total revenue of the library for this year is estimated at about $1,100 by Treasurer Ballard. The expense ' will be approximately as heavy this yvear as last, if new books are_bought: therefore a_deficit Is not an improbable result with only the re- Auced amount of money with which te work.
