Carriage repair~ MEETING AT WESTERLY Votes $5,000 For Beach Fence at Water Hill Price-Saunders Marriag There were sixty-one taxpayers in the town b&il Monday when Modera- tor Pendleton called the meeting to order, but before Clerk Whipple con- cluded reading the official call, the number had increased threefold, show- ing that there was considerabic lic Jnterest in the project of cutling €flowh Cookey hill, or Union street. The first question to be decided was whether the town would le a tax sufiicient to raise funds for cutting gown the hill. Upon motion of Judge John W. Sweeney the matter was ta- bled. He explained that the regular tax of one and one-half per cent. had been levied at the annual financial town meeting and that it was illegal to make additional assessment at this time. Town Solicitor Agard declared that it was, in his opinion, legal for the town to lay a special tax for a special purpose. The next item in the call yhether the town would ask the spe- ial /session of the general assembly to authorize the town of Westerly to increase the debt limit for the pur- pose of rasing funds for the proposed Union street improvement. As the special legislative session had adjourn- ed, this was tabled upon motion of Governor Utter. was The next question was whether the town would make an appropriation for ening and improving Beach street. William L. Clarke, president of the town cpuncil, stated that in the judg- ment of the highway committee this work should be done, and as it could not be accomplished without funds, he offered a vote that the sum of $ 000, or so much thereof as is mneces- sary, be appropriated for widening a improving Beach street, from Rock street to the River Bend cemete Judge Sweeney made amendment t the work be not commenced before September 15. 7 J. Frank . Thompson suggested that the widening and improvement he con- tinued to Thompson corners. In respense to a query from Jud Sweener. Councilman Albert H. [ worthy said that from the estimat made the cost would be between $4,500 and $5.000. _When put to a vote the appropris tion of $5,000 to improve Beach street was’ unanimously carrigd o N Then came the main question of the meeting which was in substance, Wil the town make an addition, to t $18.000 already appropriated, nece to make the proposed improvements in e n, Painting and automol Union street? ’h:.“‘ = k’l“t:" George H. President Clarke of the town coups cil stated that he believed that Che town council would take steps that would result in an official grade for Union street, and that it would be accomplished as speedily as possible. On motion of Governor Utter the meeting was dissoived. Councilman Maurice _W. Flynn's claim that the rights of the public were interfered with at Watch Hill has brought satisfactory result. He stated at a recent meeting of the town council that he believed that the erection of a fence at the Geriscom property boundary and extending be- yond high water mark, near the steam- er Block Island pier, and thereby de- priving the public from beach privi- lege was illegal, and asked that ac- tion be taken to see if the objection- able obstacle could not be removed. Councilman Flynn and Town Solic- itor Agard were appointed a special committee to investigate and see what could be done for the benefit of the public. They took the -matter up with Judge John W.
