The feature picture at the Breed theater for today is an Indian story of great merit, and pictorially is one of the gems of the season. It is entitled Red Bagle’s Love Affair, and tells of a young. Indian lad, who works on a raneh, being the only person other than white men to be employed there. The niece of the owner comes to make ® visit, and it being round—up time, the white men are all out on the plains, and the only available escort is the Indfan. He is a model "voung man, although filling a menial position, and the voung niece is won by his man- liness. She teaches him to read and write, and later he concludes to g0 to the Carlisle school. He becomes very, conspicuous there because of his phy- sical attainments, and is the lion of the school. He makes a call on the niece while in town, but is turned down flatly before the many guests, and_he returns to his old life, and lit- tle Indian sweetheart, Morning Bloom, who has been waiting with weary heart for the return of her boy lover. A strong Biograph story is on the bill ‘also, and two comedies, and anoth— er big dramatic feature. Mr. Jack Morriss, baritone, will ap- pear Monday as the sololst at the Breed, and as he is one of the most popular singers in the field, he is sure to piease all. » NEW PERSONAL TAX. Features of New Law That Go Effect Next October. Into Beginning next October, one of the most . troublesome duties. of the tax collector, the collection of the military and poll taxes, will be abandoned, and the new state or personal tax will be promulgated instead. This will be a tax of $2, 85 per cent. of which will Eo to the state and 15 per cent. to the town, to pay the cost of collecting it. The making of the enrollment was formerly a duty of the assessors. but, under the new law, it must be made by the registrars, and it is safe to say that those gentiemen will not welcome the change. Ae there are many persons who do ot understand about this tax, it night be interesting to know that ev- ery male citizen between the ages of 21 and 70 is liable o pay a poll tax ov 3L U a member of the.fire de- partm militia or otherwise exempt, they are liable to a military tax .of $2 between the ages of 21 and 45, and, when liable for this tax, do.not have to pay the two taxes, or, in other words, the military tax includes the péil tax. When the man reaches the age of 45 and is not exempt from the military tax, he is then dropped from the. tax and pays the $1 poll tax until 70 vears of agée. So, from the above, it wile be seen that every man over 21 is liable to either one or both of these taxes and must, according to the law, pay the collector. There is a state law that calls for arrest and_de- tention for the non-payment of these taxes. S the collection of the military and poll taxes has been a source of much trouble throughout the state, the new law will be received with re- joicing by the different officials. But its going into effect in October does not mean that the taxes now due un- der the present law will not have to e paid. Refuges from the Heat. ‘When Macaulay was in Rome in the summer time he used to take a walk in St Peter's daily at noon. Glad- stone, then a young man, found him there and learning it was a . habit wanted to know why, expecting some- thing profound for a reply. “On ac- count of the temperature,” was the historian’s disappointing answer. More is to be said for the churches of New York than the fact that they are cool in summer, but the fact is that they are cool—cooler than roof gardens, as cool as ceilars. The observer at the office window has often refreshed him- self on a hot day by a moment’s rest in° Roman Catholic or Episcopal churches, and has moantally blessed the dispensation which throws them open daily to the passerby.—The Office ‘Window, in New York Mail.
