Norwich aerie has endorsed the can- didacy of John J. Plans for the state convention of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, to be held in Waterbury August 30 and 31, have been practically campleted by the state convention committee. The con- vention proper will _open about '3 o'clock August 30 in St. Patrick’s hall, The committees for the. convention will then be zppointed and a little pre- Jiminary work transacted. The evening will be devoted to the entertainment of the delegates in the ew Garden hall. The ~committee is now working on the programme of en- tertainment that will be given. It will consist of singing and dancing by lo- cal talent and a few specialties. The entertainment will be whelly typically Irish. An orchestra will furnish Irish music throughout -the evening. Danc- ing will be enjoyed before and after the entertaintment. The convention will reopen with mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 10.20 o'clock August 31, which all the members of the Hiberni- ans in Waterbury and the delegates will attend. After mass the entire body will go to. St. Patrick’s hail, Where more business will be transact— ed. The annual reports will be made by the officers and officers will be elected for the coming year. The Ladies' auxiliary “will hold its convention in Columbus hall at the same time and will follow out prac- tically the same programme, attendin, the entertainment in the Garden hal and mass at the Church of the Im- maculate Conception. Great interest is being manifested in the elections. It is openly known that one or two of the Waterbury men are being supported for office. The mat- ter is being kept a little drk as vet as to the identity of the candidates, ‘but it will be announced at an early date. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. Two hundred delegates from the United States, Canada, Newfoundland, Cuba, Central and South America and the Philippines were in Quebec this week for the national convention of the Knights of Columbus, which open- ed Monday under the presidency of Supreme Knight James A. Flaherty, advocate, Philadeiphia. The city of Quebec was gaily dec— orated for the event and the local knights and citizens generally extend- ed a warm welcome to the visitors, in season. The convention, which is the first ever held of the national bedy outside of the United States, continued until Thursday, although most of the dele- gates remained until Saturday, as en- tertainment had been prepared by the Quebec members until the end of the week. Supreme Knight James A. Flaher- ty's address was in part as follows ‘“The year just ended, the 28th™ of our existence, was one of the largest in results in the orders life. Since the last convention the membership has increased from 226,289 to 245,628, or a_gain of 19,339. Of this imcrease 14,045 were associate and 5,294 insur- ance members. The increase in the number of councils was 71. It is hard- Iy necessary, I hope, in congratulating the order on'this enormous increase, to express the desire that I am sure we all feel, that great care s being taken in addition to our membership, that _more attention is being paid to quality than to quantity. Not so much in numbers as in character can we count for the success desired.” Not every man who -is ing to enter our ranks-is to be accepted without careful consid- eration of his character. “Few things done by Catholic or non—Catholic organizations have ex- cited more favorable comment- than our order’s efforts in behalf of edu- cation, in general, and in behalf of higher education, as represented by the Catholic university at Washington, D. C. Besides the gift of $50,000 given to the university, the sum of $500,000 has since been voted to’the same in- stitution. This vast ' sum of money, exceeding any effort on the part of any society to ald education, is to be paid over at the end of two vears and a half. A large part is in the bank. Recently the amounts received ranged about $6,000 a wek. It has long been noted that organizations, to live and to do well, have to live for some great principle. 'The Knights of Columbus consciously, almost instinctively, have chosen education as the vital to which their best work-is devoted. true this is will appear when the rec- ord of what is being done in the cause of education is written. “The magnificent monument to Co- lumbus, now in course of preparation, for which congress voted $100,000, is in a fair way of being ready for un- velling October 12, 1911. The natfonal assembly of the Yourth degree chose Bernard -Lynch of New Haven as master for Connecticut.
