Failure to hit can be blamed for the loses as in three of the games the home team was unable to push a run over the plate. New London took two games from Norwich, both by 5 to 0 scores, Middletown took two, 4 to 2 and 6 to 0. but we finished up by trimming Middletown, 11 to 4, op the home diamond. ¥rom now on the Norwich team is ‘ to be under a new captain, Paddy Duft having been signed by Manager Stone for that place. ~ Paddy is a man wh. experience will help the team in mauy mays, both in plaving and in baseball knowledge. When Fred Doe hat a Connecticut state league team in Mor- wich eleven years ago. Manager Stone is satisfied that McRoberts has the &00ds if he can only get his arm info condition. ~_Southpaw Mooney is to twirl against Willimantic at Sacuem purk this afternoon and a new right- hand vitcher is expected here in tiie - the Friflay game. The standing of the league as print- ed in The Bulletin on Monday morn- ing was, incorrect as far as Williman- tic’ and” New London were concerned. The correct standing is given abov From the form displayed in the last sarae, it is predicted that Norwich will came' back strong in the games this week and that some other team will be occupying last place by the end of the = | next seven days. There was a decline in team batting figures from .235 to .229, and team flelding figures also dropped from .915 to .805. Two men did some conspicu- ous batting in the last five games, Noonan leading the team by getting § hits, and McIntyre second with 6. Lefty Smith collected 3 hits \in three games, keeping his lead of the team in baiting with a mark of .338, which is a gain over last week. Noonan's fig- ures of .333 give him second place, and Paddy Duff comes in third with .300. The following shows the stickwork. NORWICH BATTING AVERAGE: mes. New York, June 27.—The stock mar- ket underwent a mood of depression today and prices were Subjected to a eevere shrinkage on a smallness of actual transactions out of all propor- tion to the amount of the declines. The crop news was not bad, and it was necessary to turn to other factors in the effort to fathom the explana- tion of the weakness of the market. There was a suspicion amongst other profiered explanations of a concerted attack by an organized bear party un- der powerful ,auspices. The appear- ance early in the day of @ rumor, often used by the bears, that J. Pierpont Morgan hed been gtricken suddenly with death, which was followed short— Iy by Ms. Morgan's appearance’at his offics to give himsslf to business ac- tivities, aroused this suspicion. The disproof of the rumor did not, how- ever, revive the market. M. Morgan's reappearance in Wall streat was cited, in another way, as a hypothetical explanation of the mar- ket’s weakness as due to disappointed speculators who had waited on his return from abroad with the idea that it would foment an active period of rising prices of stocks. The grounds on which this eupposition had been formed were the reports that he had enlisted Jarge amounts of foreign capi- tal in the purchase of American se- curities, that he had secured an agree- ment with foreign copper producers to co-operate with American producers in curtailment of output and that he had assursd the listing of United States Steel on the Paris bourse. From thesc reports and from the diligence of his banking house in getting assents of shippers to the advances in rates asked for by the railroads, it had been in- ferred by a party in the speculation that the Morgan party were 100king to higher prices for atocks. The event of Mr. Morgan's arrival home from Europe was likely to be made the oc- casion of attempts to realize specula- tive profits by the element which had followed this policy. The call money market showed no disturbance from the approach of the July settlements. Private _discount rates were easy in London and Ber- Jin.
