The next largest, contributing $55, was by the ‘Women's Missionary and Benevolent society of Nortonville, Kansas, and $50 from the ‘Women’s Society for Christian Work, of Plainfleld, N. J. The Woman's Auxiliary society of New York city contributed $17. The total receipts for the quarter amounted to $530.12. Town Clerk Everett E. Whipple has served notice on Judge Thomas H Peabody that he cannot place his name on the official ballot as prohibition can- didate for judge of probate, the town clerk stating that he has taken le- gal advice in the matter, and been ad- vised that the office Is within the gift of the Westerly town council, and that the judge of probate is not elected by the people. Judge Peabody states that he has no desire to take the mat- ter to the supreme court.
