The special town meeting held in Poquonock Tuesday evening was at- tended by a large number of taxpayers from_both sides of the town. Mustic and Noank were especially well repre- sen and have been given the cred- it of defeating the proposed resolu- tion for a tax exemption on new in- dustries desiring to locate in the town, for a limitea period. The petition that the police force be re-established for the protection of property and to keep order on the streets during the night was also de- feated, and the three villages, Groton, Mystic and Noank, will have no might patrolman. The resolution esking for #he title ot the property of Ira S. Rathburn, a Geaf mute who resides in Mystic, was passed. 'She received over 200 birth- day cards and calls. Mrs. Fish was born May 17, 1836, and is enjoying the Dest of health, Fish Traps Robbed. Thomas Fish of Norwich, who con- Aucts an oyster and trap fishing busi- ness at Mumford’s Cove, was at the Noank company's dock Wednesday with a mixed load of fish which was shipped to Fulton Market, New York. Mr. Fish experienced considerable trouble from campers near his traps last summer, who made a practjce of hauling his traps and taking the fish. There was considerable loss flnancial- ly during the season from t#e traps not being reset in the proper positions. This vear he intends to protect his property, if necessary with a rifle. Lobster Hatchery Opened. ‘The local state lobster hatchery was officially opened Wednesday for th. artificial propagation of lobsters. The jars in which the ova or spawn is placed were placed in position early in the week, and the engine which is used in forcing water circulation through the jars was started. There are about 600 egg-bearing lobsters at the hatchery, which Supt. Latham Rathburn has cared for during the ‘winter, and they will be the first to be put through the process of propaga- tion. There are few eg@-bearing iob- sters being brought into the hatchery by local fishermen on account of the recent decision of the fishermen to re- turn them to the waters @s soon as caught, that the eggs may be hatched out in’the matural manner. ‘There was a shipment of about fifty pounds of eggers received Wednesday from . Norwalk, Comn., which is very small compared with the number that was brought in and shipped here a year ago. Out of 19 lobsters drought into the hatchery last week 18 had been caught previously end had been returned to the water by the officials at the hatchery, as they were not in condition for propagation. That they have been caught before is ascertained from the hole that is in_the flipper of the tail of the lobster. This practice, it ig understood, for some Teason of the commissioners, is to be done away with. To Open Summer Cottage. The summer owned by Miss Maude Allen flmm‘. N.D,J., 1o~ cated at Mason's Island, wiil be open- ed on May 30th. Miss Allen expects t® arrive here about that time to prepare the cottage for guests. An 18 foot launch is in course of construction at the Palmer boat shop under the al- rection of Foreman Willlam Smith, which will be completed by the time of Miss Allen’s arrival, and is to be used for transportation to and from the island. News Not: A. B. Wood, naval architect, of New York, has returned home, after a brief visit in the village. Unclaimed Letters. There are two unclaimed letters at the local postoffice this week directed to Frederick Tompson and to the Un- cag Speciaity company. Mrs. Donald ttey has been called to her home in Lowrie, P. B. Although the business has been done by the town it is this year claimed that it is the business of the tree war- den to doit. Ithas usually been mown twice before Memorial day, and able- bodled men from the town farm did the trimming of the grass about the frees, the soldiers’ morument and ot~ er obstructions. It is a small job, and rather inexpensive; and it is strange that such sloverliness will be toler- ated by the servants of the people upon such & siim pretext.
