The Kingsland family owe consider— able money to Westerly people, said to be $5,000. Mr. Kingsland, who is the son of a former mayor of New YOrk, went into bankruptcy about two years ago. Some of tiie creditors re- ceived a dividend of five per cent. last month. Learning that what he believed to be a surreptitious attempt to get the Kingsland effects out of the tate, one of the creditons to the amount of $275 placed his case with Judge John W. Sweeney, who had recéived a previous claim for $175. The result was the issyance of a writ of attachment. Dep- uty Sheriff George H. Barber was sum- moned from Hope Valley to serve the writ. Several other claims against the Zoods have been filed and it will prob- ably be some time hbefore the goods reach New York, if they ever do, un- less ample bond is filed to satisfy the demands of the credito Rev. I F. Lusk, for the past theee s pastor of Grace Methodist Cnbroh, Tmoved with his family Moaday o Milton, Del, where he will succeed Rev. Mr. McGilton, who comes to Westerly. Rev. Mr. Lusk preached his farewell sermon to a large congrega- tion Sunday evening, his topic being: “Be of Good Cheer and Good Comfort.” At the close of the service John Par- ker, in behalf of the congregation, pre- sented Mr. Lusk a substantial purse of money in appreciation of his acceptable service during his pastorate in West- erly. Some time ago Chief Murphy of Nor- wich notified Chief Bransfield of West— erly that George S. Main was wanted for_theft and that Main had been seen in Westerly. Chief Bransfield got busy and a week ago informed Chief Mur- phy that the man he wanted was em- ployed by a lumbering firm in Hope Valley and suggested that the Norwich chief take the matter up with Deputy Sheriff George H. Barber. Saturday the sheriff arrested Main in a lumbering camp where he was em- ployed as a teamster and turned him over to Policeman Henderson of the Norwich force, after taking the pris- oner to the limit of his jurisdiction. Main was working in Hope Valley un- der the name of Joseph Saunders and was wanted in-Norwich for the theft of guns in that cit Miss Ellen F. Pendleton of Westerly, dean of Wellesley college, has secured a novel privilege for one of the pupils that probably will not be accepted. Miss Bertha L. Robinson of Cambridge, a junior at the college, has obtained the unprecedented privilege of leave of absence to be married. Miss Rob- inson bad promised her fiance to wed in May in spite of the fact that sh had more than a vear to complete hei course at Wellesley and the probabilit. that the college authorities would re- quire her. to withdraw as 2 student if she should become a matron. Dean Pendleton became _interested and Taid the matter bafore the faculty with the resuit that the fair junior was glven a leave of absence from May 10 for the balance of the college year, with the privilege of returning in Sep- tember and completing her course. This action made Miss Robinson %0 conspicuous at Wellesley that she was greatly embarrassed and therefore she will not avail herself of the leave of absence and will not return to college after her marriage. _Jacob Horbst suffered a serious ac- cident Monday afternoon that nearly resulted in the loss of his right hand. Mr. Herbst was employed by Michael Rose and assisted him by passing cord Wwood to be cut into stove size by Mr. Rose’s portable woodcutting machine. ‘Wood was being cut for Santo Turano at his residence, No. 3 Perkins avenue, when the accident occurred. Mr. Herbst ‘had been warned to pass the wood from the opposite side of the machine, but insisted that there was no danger, as hie would be careful and not get caught by the large circular saw. Shortly afterwards his right hand came in e¢ontact with the saw and was nearly sévered just below the wrist. Dr. M. H. Scanlon wae summoned and the injury was of such a nature that another physician was required and Dr. J. L. May was called. Itswas decided that amputation was not nec- essary and the injured man was taken to the Westerly sanitarium, the first local emergency case to be taken to that institution. Drs. Scanlon, May, Champlin and Smith decided not to amputate the hand. but straightened the fingers, connectég the tendons, set the bones and have hopes of saving the hand to Mr. Herbst, should the di floult sufgical operation result as ex- pected.
