In the common pleas court on Tues- day morning the jury was in attend- ance, and the arguments and charge in the case of Baudro vs. the Central Vermont Railway company were heard. The jury retired at 12.30 o'clock. They returned with a verdict of $170 and costs for the plaintiff. It was a suit for $500 for the killing of a horse at the Mohegan crossing. A motion for a new trial in the case of Wheeler vs. Haley, the claim being that the verdict was against the evi- dence, was heard by Judge Waller and decission reserved. Regarding the transfers in town be- ing made good to the town line, he said the company did not feel it could do it now, as there are other places where they cannot afford to do it. The Dlocking _of Franklin _square, he thought, would be adjusted, as Mr. Leary had been here regarding the matter. The Adams Express company decided there was not business enough to extend their service to Norwich Town. A cheaper parlor car rate be- tween New London and New York on five and a half hour trains was sccured, it now being 75 cents instead of $L. He spoke of the side track on Holly Hock island, which the New Haven road has built, and the extension of then by the lower part of Asylum to West Main street, out to the East Great Plain, which should be the great industrial region of Greater Norwich. At right angles to this street would be a street leading northwestward from Washington square, over which the trolley line from Norwich to Col- chester and Hartford should extend. It would be possible even now to plan a temporary structure for this troliey which we all hope will be built in the future, o that the street could be built later at the same grade. If the money which has been used in the past twenty years for the aid of the poor had been spent on some such general improvement for the city and town of Norwich, we would have some- thing to show for the large amount of money paid out to help people out of work, and those who are out of work would prefer to have work of such character to do, rather than to simply receive help from the town or charita- ble organizations or from secret so- ciety benefit funds. later.
