In the meantime the horse thief had am- ple_oportunity to dispose of the outfit, and without the knowledge of the local police it could have driven throush Westerly to New London to be ship- ped to New York by boat, without in- terference on the part of any Westerly policeman. When information of the theft was ceived it came from the Conmnecticut state police department, the delay in- dicating that there slow report made to the state police. Deputy Sher- iff Casey of Pawcatuck and the West- erly police were notified of the theft at the same time. The aaimal stolen was a brown niare weighing about $50 pounds. So with a large stock on hand and the selling season not due, they could look complacently upon the severe snow storm that pre- vafled Friday. Apart from the team- ing, all outside work was suspended. Friday afternoon teh strong eastarly wind was kicking up a choppy sea, and if_the force continued, Captain Davis of the life saving station was of opin- jon that_there would be a big surf at Watch Hill today (Saturday). o A sharp lookout for vessels' in- dis tress was kept by the surfmen as the patrolied the beach all through the dreary night. A clear case of looking for something they' did not want to find. The cars on the Norwich-Westerly, Ashaway- Westerly and Groton-Ston- ington roads were run on schedule time, but there was trouble on the Pawca- tuck Valley road Friday afternoon. Sport at Essex Watching Ducks at Ri There has been great sport at the river front at Essex for the past few days, says the Middletown Press, watching wild ducks on what is known as the Middle Ground above the steam- boat dock diving down into the water being free of ice after eels. One duck ould disappear under water for some tie time and then appear on the sur- Fishing. face with an eel in his bill, and no soon: done than a seagull which was hovering over in midair would scoop down and take the eel out of the duck’s bill and disapear in flight on to Great Meadow for an eel dinner. One after another of the ducks would go down for ecls and the gulls would take them fast as they could catch them, and sch a squawking you never heard, among the feathered tribe. One gull had his hands full when he grabbed a monster eel that would weigh several pounds from a duck, having all the eel he wanted to carry in flight for the meadow land, for safe- ty. The air was full of guils and it was a pretty sight to see them flying watching the wild ducks eel hing for them to eat. Once in a duck was too much for the ca while a gull and would swallow the eel before the bird could get it, getting on to the 2l tric of stealing them before he a swallow of it for his own sake. HAPPY RESULTS Have Made Many Norwich Residents Enthusiastic. No wonder scores of Norwich citi- zens grow enthusiastic. It is enoush to make anyone happy to find relief after years of suffering. Public state- ments like the following are but truth- ful representations of the daily work done in Norwich by Doan's Kidney Pills. Miss Amy M. Wilcox, 38 McKinley Avenue, Norwich, Conn., says: “Doan’s Kidney Pills are entitled to my strongest recommendation. Off and on for some time I was annoyed to quite an extent by & dull, heavy ache across my loins and kidneys. Those who have had similar experiences will realize how much misery and incon- venience this complaint will cause. A friend, knowing how I was troubled, recommended Doan’s Kidney Pills and I procured them from . I Sevin & Sow's drug store. They proved ef- fective from the first, and it was only a short time after commencing their use that I was completely relieved.” For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents.
