SAUNDERS, Removed te 44 West Broad Street. TPLANS T0 AID WESTERLY'S POOR Movement Made by Varicus Churches—Young Man Slips on Ice and Smashes Flate Glass Window—Watch Eill Street Improvemant. . That the project of improving Bay street at Watch Hill is to materialize was demonstrated by the purchase of property on the waterside of the street by the Wateh-Hill fire distriet during the present week. The plan is to re- riove all the buildings on that side of the street, which are small wooden structures, and utilized as small shops, for the sale of a varied stock of goods during the summer season. Their gen- eral style with accompanying business activity has galned for that section the appellation of the Midway., It is proposed after the removal of these structures, which are not in keeping with the handsome cottages at that summer resort, to build a seawall and convert that now unsightly section in- to a beautiful park, thus giving to Watch Hill a more inviting aspect from the water approatch. One of the largest owners of prop- erty that is reouired in this improve- ment is Postmaster Walter Price. and he has sold his. holdings for $16,000, which price does not include the build- ings, which are to be razed or moved to other locations. Mr, Price owns considerable property on the opposite side of the street and it is probable that some of the bufidings will be moved to new locations. The Watch Hill fire district has au- thorized a committee to act in its be- half in the purchase of property and to provide for the issuance of bonds to meet the expenses of the contemplated improvements. | One of the large plate glass show windows of the L. Tuch store in High street was completely smashed Wed- nesday night, and as completely re- , moved as if taken out of place by a ' glazier and then ,dropped on the side- walk. While two young men were walking down High street, one of them slipped and fell against the window; which was perhaps more than usually brittle, by reason, of the heavy frost, and the big sheet of glass fell clean from its fastenings in a shattered mass. How the glass happened to fall ! outward is as unexplainable as is a freak of lightning, The two young men were seen to run down High street for a short distance immediately after the crash, and then turned into Broad street at| the ordjnary walking gait. The iden-{ | tity of ‘the young men is not known, | and it is presumed that they escaped uninjured as there was no trace of | blood in the vicinity. A President Taft came from Washing- ton to attend the wedding, but Mrs. Taft's health did not permit her to make the journey. The president was accompanied by his daughter, Miss Helen Taft, and Ris sons, Robert and Charles. He was officially attended by his military aide, Captain Butt. . The ceremony was performed in a room decorated with palms and hung with mistletoe and holly. The bride was attended only by M! Margaret Lowe, her schoolgirl chum, as maid of honor. The ushers included her brothers. The Rev. Dr. J. G. H. Bar- ry, rector of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, performed the ceremony. Mr. Snowden, who has extensive business interests in the northwest, was graduated from the Sheffield sci- entific school in 1895. He and his i bride had been acquainted since they were children. Sanitation Follows the Flag. The health gervice in the Philippines has been reorganized with a single head, and the bureau of health estab- lished instead of a board of health with its cumbersome procedures. The early laws enacted under conditions of stress and haste have been revised and others passed to meet new conditions. Nearly 400 boards of health have been organ- ized in the municipalities of the archi- pelago, and a district health offieer or- ganization has been effected, which embraces every.province. At the mammoth reception to Chap- man and Alexander recently at Mechan- ics hall, Boston, a prominent Method- ist layman was presented to group of people as “a disciple of Dr. S, F. Up- ham.” Dr, Upham's memory is fra- grant all throngh New England. He was a masterful preacher; swayed himself and swayed others by a pas- sionate devotion to Jesus Christ. From New England he went to Drew theo- logical seminary as professor of pas- toral theology, and did a notable work in imparting his own devotion to the young men committed to his care. Tt is a very interesting fact that all of his sons—three—became useful minis- ters in the Methodist Episcopal church and that his father was a Methodist minister and a pioneer preacher in the case of the late Dr. Daniel F. Dor- chester, whose father was a minister and whose son and grandson are also Methodist ministers.
