Two Thousand People See Woonsocket Rac Woonsocket, R. I, Aug. 12.—The best racing of the week was witnessed at the harness meeting on the Woonsock- et half mile track by the record crowd of the meet—over 2,000 persons. Ralph Wick was the only favorite to win. In four heats Shoplifter won the 2.24 trot, Bronson, the favorite, getting the fifth jplace. Frank A. captured the 2.17 pace in straight heats. Drivers Dore, Hollenbeck and Fleming were fined $25 each for scoring ahead of the pole horse in the first heat of the'2.17 pace. Slow Track at Cleveland. Cleveland, Aug. 12.—Mediocre racing made the third day of the grand circuit meeting at North Randall uninterest- ing. The day was dark and cold and the classes were slow. Jack McKerron proved the surprise of the day, winning the second race, the 2.19 trot, in straight heaes. Country Jay will attempt to lower the world’s trotting record of 2.13 3-4 under saddle_tomorrow with Ramsey Macey up. Charley Mac, ridden by C. K. G. Billings, established the preseni record at Glennville in 1904, San Francisco will attempt to break the stallion record of 2.02 1-4 held by Cresceus tomorrow. Hard Rain Hurt Windsor Track. Detroit, Mich., Aug. 12—A hard rain last night caused a heavy track at Windsor which upset calculations to- day to a great extent, the only win- ning first choices being Minot in the fifth race at seven furlongs and Posing in the seventh @t a mile. Bill Donovan’s pitching arm, though he is still one of the greatest pitchers in the business, is no longer what it used to be, and, in fact, has not been for several years, which, however, does not mean he will not be a_winning pitcher for years to come. Donovan, like most pitchers, ruined his orm when he first broke into fast company. when he had to rely solely on the force he-could put behind the ball. Circum- stances forced him to give the art of pitching study, for when the arm began to weaken it required something be- side the speed he could master to fool the opposing batsrhen. In a few years Donovan has changed his style consid- erably. . He works with grace and ease now, and no matter how much force he puts behind the ball he does it without any apparent effort. Whenever Don- ovan sees a pitcher strain himself in pitching he feels for him and admires the pitcher who works easily. Dono- vap Is-a great admirer of Walter Johnson, whom he considers the great- est young pitcher that ever broke into fast company, and he predicts one of the greatest futures for him. Just how great & pitcher Johnson is the average patren of the game does not realize. Here is a mere boy, not yet of age, who did not have a single day's minor league experience, pitching as good ball as any pitcher in the- American league, and he does it all without any apparent effort. But there is much room for improvement in Johnson’s work which experience alone can bring him. When he learns the fine points of the pitch- ing game his work will be easfer and more effect If ever there was a youngster who stands a chance of duplicating the great record of Cy Young, it is Walter Johnson.—Wash- ington Post. Carpenters Will Postpone Montville Game. The Carpenters will not be able to go down to Montville Sunday to play the Knights of Columbus as plauned. They find that Burdick, their pitcher anG mainstay, cannot twirl bhecause of the ‘injury to his hand in sliding to a base last Sunday afternoon. The Car- penters have been unable to find an- other suitable pitcher to fill the vi- cancy, and accordingly the game will be -postponed until later in the sea son. 1t is hoped that Burdick will be able to pitch st Fort Wright Aug. 22.
