Boston, July 23.—The eastern doubles tennis championship on the courts of the Longwood Cricket club lies be- tween Nelson W. Niles and A. 8.’ Dab- ney, Jr., of Boston and R. D. Little and E. P. Larned of New York, who will meet tomorrow in the finals as the result of their respective wins to- day over R. C. Seaver and G. T. Put- ‘'nam of Boston and William J. Clothier and W. J. Weather permitting, the semi- finals in the singles will be played to- maorrow. _In these contests R. D. Little of New York will meet W. J. Clothier of Philadelphia and F. C. Wai Steel Steady New York, July 23. and toppid state of the stock-market today ‘was significant of a waiting mood on the part of the speculation. The event waited with most interest at present undoubtedly is the gmeet- ing of the United States Steel direc- tors on next Tuesday to act op the quarterly dJdividend. Speculative ‘opin- ,on has about reconciled itself to the view that there will be no change in the dividend rate at that time. Thera ‘was less fear today that this would be attended by active selling 'of the stock and a decline in the quotation. United States Steel was steady and qulet today, and conveyed the assur- ance by its action that the peg hal been inserted again at above 70, which had been withdrawn successively at 72°and at 71 on the downward course from the maximum price at 78, which was touched last Saturday. A hope- ful feeling was imparted to specula- tive holdings of the United States Steel also by the actien of Amalga- mated Copper. The rise in this- stock; which is paying a dividend at the rate of 2 per cent, to above 84 caused it to be cited as evidence of what could be done with the price of an indus- trial security paying 2 per cent. and with prospecfs. The recent 1-2 per cent, quarterly dividend on Amalga- mated Copper had been preceded by rumors of an intended increase. The immediate influence -in _the rise of Amalgamated Copper today was the active'market at advancing prices for copper warrants in the Londonm mar- ket. This gives rise to hopes that the accumulation of copper stocks in sec- ond hands in Europe may be in pro- cess Of alsorptiin The exports of copper from the United States, how- ever, fell during the past week, to less than half of the total for the preced- ing week. The rise in the price of wa-rants in London was accompanied by the marking up of the bid price at the metal exchange in New York. There were reports - that one of the large producers was' taking no ‘more orders for delivery beyond October, in the confidence that prices will be higher by that time. Crop news was mainly. favorable, with the exception of some reports of hot. winds that might cause detrioration-in the corn crop., This did not prevent a rise in Rock Island, ‘classed as one of the principal corn carriers. The strength of occasional stocks in the list and, even more, the renewed support ac- corded United States Steel was ef- fective in holding the general market, in spite of the semi-stagnation of the trading. Estimates of the week's eur- rency movement indicated a larger in- flow from the interior exchanges on’ York. -The sub-tredsury opera- tlor:; also have yielded a small amount to the banks. The loss of nearly $8,- 000,000 by the week's gold exports to South America promises to be mad: up sufficiently to leave an 'indicated net loss in bank eash of but little over a-million dollars. Bends were irreg- ular, Total sales, par value, $2,956,- 000. United States two and the threes decnned 1-4 per cent. on call. STOCKS. j and Johnson, in five sets.
