The entire unresponsiveness of the entire market to the mpressive advance in United States Steel proved a striking. feature of the day: This had much to do in causing the disconragement to eftortg to move the market, which was responsible for the practical stagna- tion, of the late dealings. The accu- rulation of United States Steel was most persistent and eggressive, both for home and London account. Buy- ing from both sources was considered important_and as due to infiuential Interests, The highest price before to- fay was 69 3-8, on June 3, As the one- ralf per cent. quarterly dividend came off the stock last week, today's price of 677-8 exceeds the previous record by that much additional. There was a0 new development concerning the propenty to account for the strength of United States Steel. ‘It was urged @’ the beginning of active trading of the stock in Parls might be made the cecasion for a stock market demon- siration, Amalgamated Copper pass- ed from under the depression which tas held it for days and moved up- wards, in spite of another decline in Iondon and unfavorable opiniongs on he trade position reported from Paris. Fyris itself gave over the active set- ng of coppers, which it had been fol- lowing in connection with the eager sceculation In_ South African gold mines, which has engaged the atten- tion of Paris operators. Union Pacific made some show of strength, but Southern Pacific was heavy. This al- ternating movement in the two Harri- man stocks, with first one and then the other advancing, has been a feat- ure of the.recent tradings which helps tc the confusion of speculative senti- ment which exists. Much of the gra- witous informati in the shape of tips, distributed before trading began, went wrong today, and this was an- other factor in keeping sentiment un- scttled. The Hill stocks were persist- cntly heavy, though_picked by the tip- siers for a brisk upward movement. The new impetus to the United States Sieel movement also was contrary to ided _promise. Outside of ates Steel, the most consple- ‘in the day’s dealings was ed. The rise in that to $11-4 was accompanied by crenmstantial reports of @ coming ab- sorption by the Lackawanna, with,a gnarantee of a dividend on Wabash preferred as a compensation, While circumstantial and persistent, this re- vort was without any confirmation. “he sudden movement in various dor- mant securities was a_peculiarity of the market, as it was last week. A Scrappy Ball Player—Equally Good at-Second or Third. Writing. of Hobe Ferris, who was shortstop on the pennant winning Nor- wich team In 1900, a Holyoke baseball critic says: There are a_great many ball players in the major league who have become so wedded to one positiof- that when they are shifted they fall down great- ly in the playing, but this is not the case of Hobe Ferris, Who is now put- ting up a star game at the dizzy cor- ner for McAleer's St. Lonis American league club. Ferris, until this season, was always a second baseman, and was as good as almost any of the big leaguers, He has always hit around .275 for the eight years he has been in the majors, and has played on but two clubs, the Boston Americans, and this vear with the St. Louls club of the same league. Ferris while with Boston, played on two world cham- plonship_teams, his club one year de- feating New York, the pennant win- ners in thel National league, and the next year defeating Pittsburg, _also winners in the same league. Ferris has only one fault which has hurt him. He is what is known as a scrap- py ball player and sometimes does a little too much of it. He is in the play from the first inning until the last man is retired In the ninth, however, and his never giving up has won a great many games for the teams with which he has played.
