All Sections of State Satisfied Gardiner Greene is Exocellent Judicial Tim- ber. The following editorial comments on | the appointment of Gardiner Greene of this city to the superior court bench show the high estimation in which he is held about the state and the regard of his qualifications tor the position: Judicial in Temperament. Governor Weeks is to be congratu- | lated upon the appointment of Marcus | 1. Holcomb of Southington and Gardi- | nér Greene of Norwich to the superior | bench. Mr_Holcomb is a well known figure in the life of the state and hes the confidence of all as a man and & | lawyer. Mr. Greene is one of the best | equipped lawyers in the eastorn section | of the state and'is essentlally judicial |in his temperament. Like Mr. Hol- i comb, he has seen service in the ‘em- | ploy. of the state and is well grounded in its history.—New Haven Journal- | Courier ! Jurist of Proved Ability. | Mr. Greese, though mnot so well | known n this part of the state, is a jurist of prove dability, who has at- | tended to his business in the past with {avoidance < fself-advertising. Those | who know him well are confident he | will make a good judge, and the rea- | sons they ~ive are excellent. His evi- {dent qualities are all in his favor. New Haven Register, Is “Tall Timber.” Hon, Gardiner Greene of Norwich fis also “fall timber.” He is a citizen of the highest character and professionai attainments. His scholarly mind is highly developed and his work on the | bench is certain to be of high order. None but words of praise wili be heard ny quarter concerning Mr. Greene. That Messrs. Holcomb and Greene ceserve high place in public estimation |is bevond a doubt. The state will | honor "itself by honoring them.—New | Haven Leader. Measure Up t> Standard. In the apoointment of Attorney Gen- eral Holcomb and Gardiner Greene to the bench of the superior court Gov- | ernor Weeks recognizes the clais of ability, locality and political service. Both gentiemen have high standing as iawyers, both have been closely asso- ciated with republican pelitical prog- ress and both, by their residences, represent sections of the- state which have expressed earnest desire for rec- ognition. They measure well up to standird of the Connecticut hench, and their elevation will probably have more original form chec has likewise been preserved, though we little think of it when we draw a cheque, or when we suffer a check, or when we speak of the chancellor of the ex- chequer. The great object of the chess player is to protect the king, and when the king is in danger the op- ponent is obliged to say “check,” i. e., shh, the king. After this the varlous meanings of check, cheque, or ex- chequer become easily intelligible. Ex- chequer, or scaccarium, the name of the chess board, was afterward used for the checkered cloth on which ac- counts were calculated by means of counters. The Right Sort of Wife. An Atchison man recently refused a proposal of marriage. “I like you,” he sald to the girl, “but you have too many friends. There would be too many at our wedding, for you would | | | 47 Franklin Street, be afraid not to invite them all, and | your many friends wouldn't be satis- fled unless they made fools of us by playing some kind of crazy pranks on us when we started on our wedding journey. You have so many friends that we would get all kinds of wed- ding presents that we don’t want, and would be kept poor in future trying to pay back when the donors got mar- ried. You are nice, and I like you, but what I am looking for in a wife is & woman who is friendless.”—Atchison Globe. A Lost Bet. An Irish waiter named Kenny was noted for his wit and ready answers. A party of gentlemen who were Stay- ing at the hotel heard of Kenny’s wit, | and one of them made a bet that he | would say something Kenny couldn't answer at once. A'bottle of champdgne was ordered; the one wio had made the bet took hold of the bottle and commenced to open it. The cork came out with a “bang,” and flew into Kenny’s mouth. “Ah,” he sald, “that is not the way to Cork ’ Kenny took the cork ont of his mouth and replied: “No, but it's the way to ‘Kill-Kenny.'
