S Violation of Law Proven in Six” Cases—Small Fire on Main St—New Snap Caps for Hydrants—Muster of Jeffers-Built Engines Projected. Of 1dte the Westerly police commit- tee has' evidently taken the chief of police into their confidence, realizing that experience was & nocessity in real liquor seizures and .prosecutions, Plans-were Jaid to secure evidence of actual sales in several places. ' This evidence was obtained and the seizure by search warrants was arranged. After consideration, the police com- mittee deemed it best to have thi search warrants prepared and thi prosecutions that are to follow to be done by an aftorney other than the regular town solicitor. Harry B. Agard, ex-town solicitor, was engaged and on Friday night six successful lignor raids were made_in what is termed “The Allen,” in Pierce street and vicinity. The raids were arranged by Chief of Police Bransfleld, the serving officers being himself, Sheriff Wilcox and Po- licemen Brown and West, assisted by several special constables. The prem. ises visited and searched were those of Antonio Salameno, Joseph Green, Charles Gabrillo, Santo Turano, Salva< tore Furrio, and another whose name as not known and designated as John at 50 Pierce street, in the search rant. Beer and liquor were found each place, seized and carried away by_the officer: The owners of the liquors and ves- sels will be given opportunity to prove their property g the Third district court and, failing to do this, the prop- erty will be adjudged confiscated, to the state and ordered destroyed. After this procedure’ the parties named will be arrested, charged with tual sales and keeping intoxicating liquors with intent to sell. Attorney Agard will be the prosecutor and Chief Bransfield the complainant in each case, Fire alarm was sent in Saturday aft- ernoon from box 21 for a blaze in a long shed adjoining the rear of the residence of Councilman C. Clarence Maxson, in Main street. There was quick response by the department and the firo was extinguished before seri- ous damage resulted Chief Engineer Cottrell was engaged Saturday afternoon placirg newly in- ented caps on the hydrants in the nter of the town. By their aid snap connectiong can be made and water be sent through the hose without the slightest delay at the hydrant end. hag occasioned a discussion of the ad- visability of holding a muster at Paw- tucket, the entries to be limited to Jeffers machines, William Jeffers was a Pawtncket machinist who built fire engines of various types, and from the 'time he reconstructed the old Gaspee of Providence in 1845 he built over one hundred hand engines. Those in- terested in the starting of the move- ment_for a Jeffers muster have se- lected Pawtucket, the home of the man who gave his name to the engines, as a fitting place, and it is expeeted that the project will soon take tangible shape. There are a number of Jeffers-built machines in Rhode Island. Three of these are of old_plano cabinet style, double deckers, while the others are of the more modern side-stmoke box tvne, and one, the old Grasshopper of Phil< lipsdale, is of a tvpe of only which three were ever built. Of these double deckers, the Gaspee is at Providence, the Haycart, former- Iy Rhode Island Ones of Westerly, is at Pawtucket, and the Nameaug, for- merly of New London, is now_at East Providence. Other machines are the Narragansett No. 2 at Kiverside, Ocean No. 1 at Knightsville, King Philip at Bristol, Mechanic at Warren, Watche- moket at East Providence, ~Star -at Cransi 1d_Grasshopper at Philips- dale. There is also u Jeffers tub at ‘Wakefield, which has not been enter- ed in a muster in recent years. In the event of such a muster being arranged, there will probably be a nov- el side attraction for a special prize between the old Nameaug, formerly of New London, and the old Haycart, formerly Rhode' Island Ones of West- erly. Bffort would be had to have the brakes of these old machines manned by members of the present Nameaug company of New London and the pres- ent Rhode Island Ones of Westerly. and with the oldest member of each company in the pulpit, fire trumpet in hand, urging the men at the brakes to “brake her down” and force the prize winning stream, Plans are being made for holding a firemen's muster in Pawtucket as a featur of the Fourth of July cele- bration, put whether this will be lim- ited to ‘a Jeffers muster or be an open event is undecided.
