The most important matter discussed was the pooling of the receipts of holiday | sem gdmes. When the matter came to a vote a tie resulted, and rather than have so important a matter left to the ?recident to decide, it was dropped al- ogether. Those voting for the pooling of the receipts were New Britain, Wa- terbury, Bridgeport and New Haven, and those against it Springfield, Hol- yoke, Hartford and Meriden. The Meriden Franchise. The Meriden franchise, which has been gold to Northampton parties, will stand under the name of Meriden until the full purchase price has been paid, the last payment to be made just prior to the opening of the season, at which time the name Northampton will be assumed. Until that time both Meri- den and Northampton will have a rep- resentation at the league meetings. The Holiday Schedul The schedule of the regular games not having been completed, the holiday schedule which had been prepared by President O'Nell was taken up and ra ifled. Values Brought Down With a Crash— Closing Prices the Lowest. New York, Feb. 23—Suspicion and distrust of the speculative positinn in the stock market spread with rapid growth today, and brought the fabric of values down with a crash. The con- vistion was quick in foerming after the thro%ing open of the steel market to competition last week that the stock | 2 market position was an artificial on and had been brought about by false assumptions of the trade position. Va- rious factors combined to accentuate the weakness today, and it gained cu- mulative force. The serious view tak- en by the London market of our dis- turbances es shown by the heavy de clines effected there yesterday during the New York holiday paved the way for a reversal of the downward cour London sent very heavy selling orders to the New York market for execution as soon as trading began, and thi helped the downward rush of prices which began after the opening. There was considerabls accumulation of sell- ing orders from domestic gources also. The weak early market which resulted from these oonditions was no more than had been expected,'and aler traders stood ready to take advantage of the decline to take sfbcks, some to cover short contracts put out last weck and wome for an upward reaction, in view of the considerable extent to which the deeline had run. This buy. ing steadied the market mom but It proved a weakening fact the decline was removed, purchases were pressed for liquidation along_with the continued outside sell- ing. The new set of weakening factors came in the inferences drawn from the reconvening of the supreme court in Washington. Declsions were handed down against the New York Central for rebating, and the speculative ele- ment, for teasone which a lawyer might not follow, jumped to the con- clusion that a later deciston would up- hold the constitutionality of the com- modities clauss of the Hepburn law and so constraln the anthracite rail- roads to get rid of thelr mining prop- ertles. Another weak zroup of stocks was found in the minor railroads that have been exploited for rapid advances on assumptions of mergers or benefits to accrus from their purchase by larger systems. Of the steel trade position the speculative contingent was dispo: d to take the gleomiest view. The 1l news from the steel trade was the rumors were confusing and and the unsettiing effect in y issu- s, the result viating liquid: a slight check when the room shorte took the day's profits, but the last break of the day was the most demoralized en throughout end closing prices were at the lowest. Another reduction in the price of copper and the beginning of the new trial of the Standard Oil fine case were contributory factors to the gloom. Bonds were weak. Total sales, par value, $7,200.000.
