C, A. defeated the Bulkeley In- vincibles Saturday night in the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium. The home lads finished the first half in the lead 12 tc 4, but the New London boys came back with a rush in the second half, making things interesting by tying and passing the Mighty Five, who were alled on for a fresh burst of speed to win out in the few final minutes At the start the Bulkeleys opened like winners, handling the ball clean- v and passing around their opponents, but their eye for the basket was bad and they missed 'a number of shots. Right Forward Tuttle of the Mighty Five, who played a pretty zame throughout, opened the scoring by shooting a basket from the center of a melee in front of his own goal, and was soon followed by Clish with a basket from the floor. The Norwich boys put on more steam, while the visitors let up, their center ,Tyler, be- ing the only one to score for them in this half, by two pretty shots from the floor, Two foul goals thrown by Amburn put the Norwich geore at 12, Rydholm and Tuttle getting baskets from the floor. For the second half the Norwich five substituted Dilworth for Clish at right guard and New London put in Marsters in place of Arnold at right forward, The Invincibles started off with fast passing work and improved greatly in locating the basket. Bas- kets by Arnold, Troland and Prince, and three foul goals by Tyler put the Invincibles in the lead, 13 to 12, but Amburn_tied this en he had a chance for a foul goal. A field bas- ket by Tyler put New London in the lead again, and Amburn’s foul goal brought Norwich up to within a point, 15 to 16. Burke shot the final basket from the floor which gave the Mighty five the game, 16 to 15. Bulkeley lost a lot by not having a fellow who could shoot foul goals, as there were 15 breaches of the rules called by Referee Brown on the Nor- wich five, from which the Invinei- bles could get only three points. Norwich Rolls New London—No For tonight in the Eastern Cornecti- cut Duckpin league the schedule calls for Norwich Team No. 2, the Warriors, to go to New London and for Team No, 1 to roll at home against Westerly No. 1, the league leaders. But the latter game will not be rolled tonight, but will be postponed to Friday night in this city to accommodate the Westerly five. Norwich rollers find the New Lon- dor: alleys hard to make a good show- ing on, so that the boys will feel well | satisfied if they make it a two out of three win down there tonight. This will keep their place in the league nding. The other two teams to meet are Westerly No. 2 vs. New, Lon- | don No. 1 at Westerly. JOHNSON A HUMAN HINGE. Big Negro Fighter Makes Big Im- pression on Englishman. “Bell's Life” an English publica- tion, gives the following estimate of Johnsore Jack Johnson, in the light of ca- bled detalls, stanc revealed as a champion fit to rank with the best of the big men who have ~one be- fore, not excepting even the late Pe- ter Jackson. Those who saw John- son could not fai] to be impressed by the immense power suggested by his towering bulk, his m ve chest and powerful arms. Some there were who took exceptiqe to his lightness below the -middle, getting perhaps that slenderness of leg is characteristic of the race to which Johnson belongs and that his slim, sinewy middlepiece con- Fast Basketball with Bulkeley Invincibles — Warriors Roll at New London—=Sports of the Day. . e y int, 16 to 15, the tributed greatly to force of his blows DY e ! and the extent of his reac » Johnson in action .appears lik a gi- gantic human hinge. In delivering a blow, the whole upper part of the bedy moves easily forward from the hips, impelled by the great back mus- cles, and weighted by the massive, shining trunk. The blow delivered, back goes the great hinge, the hands already in position, for offense or de- fense, What need,’ then, for the mas- sive-looking legs which the critics de- clared were necessary to make John- son- the perfect fighting machine he has been dubbed in the States. John- son, as a matter of fact, though light on his feet, for a big man, uses his legs very little in the ring. Great nat- ural advantages, backed up by splen- did science, Johnson undoubtedly pos- sesses, and one is forced to admira- tion of Burns' pluck in standing up be- fore such a man. YALE NOT GOING TO ROW IN ENGLAND. Race on Thames With Harvard to B the Only One, . The Yale crew has about as much idea of entering the Marathon event in the Madison Square garden as it has of making a trip to England next summer o) of arranging a race with ‘Columbia, as has been reported. Yale’'s rowing programme season will be arranged on the “simple life” model, says a New Haven re- port, and outside the annual four-mile go with Harvard, it is not likely to include a race with any outside uni- versity. Yale has given up her an- nual spin with Annapolis because it takes to much time for the trip and, win or lose, Yale will not cross the Atlantic this summer and tackle the |~ ;r nner of the Oxford-Cambridge af- ai The Yale second crew may be sent down to Philadelphia for the Ameri- can Henley, but even this is far from certain, Yale rowing officials are a unit against advising a reduction of the four-mile event to three miles. Yale's crews for 1909 have been or- ganized the past week. The freshman squad numbers more than 125 oars- men. The 'varsity now includes 99 and more will register next week. There are 12 eights rowing daily on the row- ing machine. SATURDAY’S MARKETS. 8tock Values Up—Covering of Shorts Advances Prices. New York, Jan. 16.—In the two hours of trading in today's stock market the movement of values was in the direc- tion of higher prices under the influ- ence of covering of shorts that was encouraged to a great extent by Indi- cations of support in the Harriman sheres and in saveral other issues which were taken by representative houses. The strength in the Harriman group was especially pronounced i the last hour, when Union Pacific sold up more than 2 points, the rest of the list following the lead, ocal tractions, Atchison, Reading, apeake and Ohio and American Smelting being features. There were 1o outside news developments accounting for the gen- eral advances, the movement being based entirely upon the somewhat oversold condition of speculation at a time when a good class of buying en- tered the market. The market closed strong at about the best figures of the day. STOCKS. Sales. High. 12100 Amalgamated Copper 80% 300 Am. & Foundrs... . 481 Do. pfd ... Am. Cotton Oil Am. Hide & L. pfd.... Am.
