This act can not be it} “administered so as to facilitate the acquisition ‘of farm land” because the terms of the act expressly limit its benefits to farm owners. Farmers’ plank—“We pledge com- prehensive studies of farm production costs, at home and abroad, and the un- censored publication of facts found in such studies.” Proposed by National Board of Farm Organizations. Republican plank—“Sclenhfic study of agricultural prices and farm pro- duction costs at home and abroad, with a view to reducing the frequency of abnormal fluctuations; the uncensored publication of such reports.” The Republican plank limits the field 'of these studies to the one pur- pose of “reducing the frequency of ab-- It will absolutely pick up No harvesting machine is i St. Louis, Mo. : Postage Pald—Only 398 Guaranteed for Six Months Solid, All-Leather Outing Shoe, specially built for farmers’ use. Farmers’ plank—“We pledge our- selves to accord ag'ricultuge the same consideration in tariff legislation as is accorded to other interests.” Propos- ed by National Board of Farm Organ- izations. Republican plank—Nothing. Farmers’ plank—Conservation of natural resources. Proposed by Na- tional Board of Farm Organizations. Republican plank—Declares in favor of conservation and at the same time declares in favor of the oil and water- power bills, which hand these re- sources over to private corporations. Farmers’ plank—“We pledge .the re- peal of laws restricting the rights_of free speech, free press and peaceable assemblage and we pledge the restora- tion to the people of these fundamen- tal rights.” Proposed by Farmers’ Na- tional council and National Board of Farm Organizations. Republican plank—“We demand that every American citizen shall en- joy the ancient and constitutional . right of free speech, free press and free assembly and the no less sacred- right of the qualified voter to be rep- resented by his duly chosen represen- tatives.” But how can the American citizen “enjoy these rights” when the war- time espionage and sedition acts are still in-effect and the Now York Re- publicans throw Socialists out of the legislature as soon as they are elected. FAIL TO DECLARE AGAINST COMPULSORY TRAINING Farmers’ plank—“We are opposed to any form of compulsory military training in time of peace.” Proposed by Farmers’ National council and Na- tional Board of Farm Organizations. Republican plank.—Nothing. Farmers’ plank—“We pledge our support to graduated income and ex- cess profits taxes, supplemented by a graduated inheritance tax to furnish the additional revenue needed to meet the cost of the war.” Proposed by Na- tional Board of Farm Organizations. The Farmers’ National council urged a tax on all capital above $25,000 to meet the cost of the war. Republican plank—For reduction of taxes and “substituting simple for complex laws which * * * need- lessly repress enterprise.” Probably means the substitution of a sales tax, paid by consumers, in place of excess profits taxes, paid by profiteers. Farmers” plank—“We pledge our support to stringent immigration laws and especially oppose the admission of Oriental labor.” Proposed by Na- tional Board of Farm Organizations. Republican plank — Substantially the same but in different language. Farmers’ plank—Urges immediate repeal of Esch-Cummins act, which taxes the people to guarantee railroad profits and advocates public ownership of railroads. Proposed- by Farmers’ National council. Republican platform—*“We are op- posed to government ownership and operation or employe operation of the railroads (Plumb plan)., * * * We indorse the transportation act of 1920 (Esch-Cummins law).” Farmers’ plank—Condemns Jones bill, which allows sale of government- owned ships to private shipping con- cerns at a fraction of their cost. Pro- posed by Farmers’ National council. Republican plank—For an American merchant marine “owned by private capital and operated by private efer- gy. We indorse the sound legislation recently enacted by the Republican congress that will insure the promo- tion and maintenance of the American merchant marine (Jones bill).” ‘PAGE TEN * ADVERTISEMENTS The New Improved Bear.
