¥ L; B il 47 ¥ i AL S T L 0 Support Your Own Cause— ~ Not Your Opponents’ In ‘his letter to Charles“Patterson, Tom Parker Junkin, noted League opponent, discuss- ed the proposed anti-League campaign quite at length and outlined a plan whereby the fight on the League could be nearly, if not altogether, financed by the support of large advertisers who are interested in the defeat of the League program. Following is a part of that letter, written January 2, 1917: The financial end of the project, I believe, could largely, if not entirely, be taken care of through the organization of the second branch of the bureau work—an advertising bureau as an adjunct to the publicity work. This advertising bureau would work along lines something like this: \ To interest a number of ADYERTISERS of more or less national connections who have considerable INTEREST in the battle to be fought in these states. THESE FIRMS WOULD BE EXPECTED TO PLACE A-CERTAIN PORTION OF THEIR ADVERTISING BUDGET INTO THIS CAMPAIGN, their advertising contracts in these two states to be handled by this agency, or at least such portion of it as would-go to the country press. - _ ~ St Thege advertisers would be expected to enter into a contract with this agency for definite amounts for the year’s campaign, to the end that we would be able to deter- mine how far the proposition could be thus financed. . The details of the placing of this advertising with the publishers would, of course, have to be left largely with this bureau, that we would be able to place it where it would secure the best returns for the cause. The purpose being, of course, to give as much support to the papers friendly to us as possible. & . The Reliance Publicity Bureau was established and it did succeed in getting some advertising and in, prejudicing some advertisers against the Nonpartisan Leader. There is no quarrel between the organs - ized farmers and honest business men who render service and charge reasonable profits, but politic?a enemies of the Nonpartisan League have sought to line up the business people against the farmers. - Advertising— = A Menace or a Support? _Advertising largely supports the great newspapers and the great magazines. The power of advertising is frequently used to control editorial opinion. ‘Far too often it is used to that end. It is used to crush publications that do not agree with the political views of powerful advertisers or POWERFUL FINANCIAL INTERESTS which are able to IN- TIMIDATE BIG ADVERTISERS. L G . S o How can the American people counteract this? How can the free and independent - - working people of America counteract this? There is but one method. It is to show- preference to those publications which dare to tell the truth and to champion the cause . of freedom. Tt is also to SHOW PREFERENCE TO THE FIRMS WHICH ADVER- - TISE IN FREE AND INDEPENDENT PUBLICATIONS. Give your business to those firms to show that you appreciate their fair selection of advertising ‘mediums. N If you support Leader advertisers, you support your own paper and your own cause, not the cause of Tom Parker Junkin and his anti-League associates.
